SAT scores and level playing field

There are people who take SAT at different times, different years yet their SAT scores are considered for admission purposes. What I mean by this is let’s Student 1 takes SAT in Fall of 2013 and Student 2 takes SAT in Spring of 2013 and they both have scored 2000 and they both apply to same college.

How does SAT manages so that difficulty levels are about the same otherwise same score of 2000 won’t be level playing field.

That’s precisely why they need experimental sections. These sections have two purposes. They try out new problems to see how people do with them so they know where to put them when they use them on future tests. But they also have old questions that they use to compare the performance of the current testing group to that of previous testing groups so that they know how to set the curve. That way, at least in theory, a 2000 now is equivalent to a 2000 last fall.

That’s why the scores are based on curves that vary from test to test.
