Why do some colleges indicate that SAT subject tests are required for some students?

Just as some high school’s are more demanding than others, some colleges have more requirements than others. Those are just the rules.

Some schools don’t require subject tests for students who submit ACT scores. The rationale seems to be that ACT is already subject-oriented, so more test scores would reveal nothing. I’m skeptical of this position, but I don’t make the rules.

Some schools also require tests for specific programs, simply because the tests are relevant: E.g., math for an engineering program.

I’m curious to know if there are other reasons for requiring subject tests of some applicants but not others.
