Since the old days, when I rode my dinosaur to college…there has been a big rise in schools asking for SAT subject tests. I am just wondering if applicants can substitute AP scores? It seems a waste to take , say, SAT math 2 and AP calc.

No, the SATs are for fair comparison. They serve totally different purposes, so the SAT subjects are compulsory (if the school says so)

No. Those schools that ask for SAT subject tests are quite clear that it is what they require. None require APs.

I don’t know of any colleges that let you substitute AP scores for SAT subject tests. If they ask for SAT subject test scores, that’s what they want.
