SAT Subject Tests

Please explain to an anxious HS junior the procedure for SATs, SAT IIs, and SAT Subject tests. I don’t want to hyperventilate and die after my guidance counselor demonstrates yet again her complete ignorance of the system.

satii = subject test, what and how many you should take depends on the college
but almost always take the sat

Check and see if the colleges you are applying to require SAT IIs.

My ideal college is UChicago, which doesn’t require SAT II. However, I’m also applying to Cornell, Yale, maybe Brown, and then my safety schools. This is subject to change, but I know the Ivies I’ve selected require SAT II scores or the ACT Writing. Yale wants three SAT II subject tests or the ACT Writing. So how do I manage this?

I’ve taken the PSAT and I’m starting to study for the real thing. I’m taking “SAT and Subject tests” in May, and then the same thing again in June. I’m taking the ACT in April. What is the procedure for the subject tests? Do I choose which ones to take, or which ones to send? And how do I study specifically for those subjects?

All SAT (including SAT I and IIs) scores get sent on a score report. For the ACT, you can choose what score to send.

Okay…here’s the procedure:

you can take on 1 testing date:
…3 SAT II (subject tests) OR!!
…1 SAT (long sat)

You must send all your testings for the Sat, but you CAN withhold ACT.

SAT IIs at decent scores (I’ll let someone else help you there for the schools you listed) look very good. Take them as soon as possible after you complete the course you are taking them in. For example, I am taking the SAT II in Lit the day after my last day of class (test date is 10 June), when everything is fresh in my mind. But for my SAT II for the AP class I’m in (US History), I’m taking it in May, which is again right after my class ends (six days before the AP exam will mean we’ve recently finished all new material).

I would go to these sites for info:

www.collegeboard.com (SAT and SAT subject tests)
www.act.org (self explanatory!)

ive heard colleges only use satII’s for placement? is that true? it probably depends on the school…?

As a general statement, that is false. They are also an indicator of how difficult classes were at one’s school and compare’s one’s grasp with that of other students.

so they would be used for admissions and not just placement?
