SAT Subject Tests

I read on another post that Stanford has “deemphasized” SATs, ACTs, etc. compared to other top schools. How true is this for the SAT IIs? Does anyone know how they view them and/or how they view applicants that don’t have them?

Approximately 5% of students who are admitted by Stanford have no SAT IIs. Nonetheless, Stanford seems to have less reservation about SAT IIs.

I wouldn’t necessarily say that Stanford “deemphasize” SATs, since according to its applicant profile. Higher scores mean slightly, and I repeat, slightly, higher admission rate.

What do you mean when you say Stanford has “less reservation about SAT IIs”? Just that they release the stats more readily? Where did you get that stat anyway?

On Stanford’s website (FAQ) they say the following, “SAT Subject Tests are recommended but not required for admission. We recommend taking at least two SAT Subject Tests, as such information will assist us in our evaluation process. Applicants, however, who choose not to take SAT Subject Tests will not be at a disadvantage in the admission process.”
Applicants are not disadvantaged…what exaclty does that mean?

That also makes me question that 5% statistic and Stanford’s releasing it…if they say applicants are not disadvantaged yet admit a class with 5% not having SAT IIs, that would be pretty contrary to how they answer the FAQ…opinions?

^Those who submit SAT IIs are able to show their strengths academically in another way. So while not submitting them can’t HURT, submitting them can definitely HELP (and most applicants probably do submit them).

It’s a low percentage of no SAT II takers because most applicants to Stanford also end up applying to other top schools, many of which require them, and also because most applicants take the classes that prepare them for the subject tests.

One admission counselor told me once that “colleges love SAT II’s” . I suppose they help them compare grades from one high school to the next in a particular subject.
