SAT Test and Score Choice

Good evening,

I took SAT 1 and did OK on it: 650, 630, 690
I am going to take again. My questions:

 1. Should I use 4 free score reports? What if I do worse on each section, will UVA still see the test results?
 2. If I do better on at least one section, and UVA selects the best score on each section, then I think it makes sense.
 3. Is there really a reason not to take advantage of 4 free score reports for SAT1?
 4. If I select not to report the second SAT and wait until I know the score, then when I want to report it, will I have to pay?

Thank you for all the answers.

Dean J at UVA has a nice admissions blog that should help you with your questions, specificially score choice:

Thank you for the reply. I have read it earlier, but I still have a question. When I first took SAT and selected 4 free score reports, one of which was UVA, did UVA see it? Now I am going to take it for the second time, and I am planning on selecting 4 free score reports again. Does it mean that only now or close to the application deadline UVA will select the best scores on each section?

I’m writing this without knowing exactly how Score Choice works on the student side. I do not know if once you “hide” a score, if it stays hidden permanently or if you have to hide it each time you send scores. That being said…

Each time you selected UVa to get a score, that score and all prior was sent to UVa.

Each time I open a file, I hit a “show scores” button and the computer system goes into the scores that have been sent from the applicant and pulls the best ones. So, I may open your file in January and see the best scores from November and earlier, but if I open it again a month later and a new score has arrived, I might see a new set of best scores if you took the test in December and did better on a section or two.

Does that makes sense? I’ll try to elaborate on my blog later this week.

Dean J, thank you very much. This communication line is amazing.

My concern is: if I take SAT again and score worse on all sections, will UVA see it, if I select UVA as one of 4 free score reports? Or will it not even show, and the program automatically selects the best scores on each section from the first test. Will UVA know that I took SAT twice and did not improve any the second time? Does it matter? Or does my best score only matter?

Thank you very much again

When I hit that “show scores” button, I don’t even care about the dates. I look at the scores and move on. We don’t spend oodles of time reading into scores and the dates.

Dean J,

Thank you very much and have a great day.

Dean J,

I have a 2000 on the SAT and a 33 on the ACT.
Do you guys take into consideration my 2000(if I have to sent it)?

A question from a parent about SAT/ACT scores and when they are sent. I assume a file is created for each person that sends in their application and the fee. Does this mean that any other documents, SAT/ACT/Letters of Recommendation, cannot be sent until the application and fee have been submitted? If they are sent prior to the application - are they filed away for future reference?

momto4, when D applied last year the actual application and fee was the last thing she submitted. Recommendations, transcripts and SAT scores were already there. Whatever the system is, it definitely works as everything was pulled together electronically. I’m sure Dean J can explain it much better.

Dean J has a wonderful admissions blog with tons of information about the process. You may want to look there also.

Thanks, Sabaray.
Hi Dean J,
I was wondering what the prospects are for an out of state student applying to UVA?
