I got a 1980 on my SAT and all of the conversion charts say that its equivalent to a 30 on the ACT; however, it seems as though people are a lot more impressed with a 30 than a 1980. Whats up with this?

Human brains place a lot of importance on round numbers. A 30 is at that magic threshold of 30 points, so it looks impressive. A 1980 is not quite 2000 points, so it does not look as impressive.
