sat verbal for ESL ppl...

guys what did u get on the verbal and writing sections of the sat I and the SAII writing if applicable…if you did well, can you give me some tips on how to excell on that part of the test.
Other people’s feedback is also welcomed, thanks

95% of the ESL are destined to get pwned by SAT, and that’s what the SAT I is for : screening smart fobs

I was in ESL for a very short time and I got a 690 on the SAT verbal. Still waiting for writing, which will rape me.

u got any studying tips for me?

i got raped in a big time.

got 750 verbal in SAT I. Still waiting for SAT II Writing.
If you’re junior, take old SAT cuz there are less critical reading, which i think is the weakest for ppl w/ ESL (at least it was for me). just memorize bunch of words and read newspaper/magazine (i read SI, NYT, etc.) and read stuff outside of your comfort zone.
hope i got 700+ in writing…

thanks…and congrats on that high score…good luck

I would say read as much as you can.

Read stuff like Dostoevsky, Gaarder, and a few of those Kaplan vocab building words. Write lots of essays and practice a lot of critical reading.

Is it worth reading the long long ( 600+ pages and size 10 font) classics? ( ie George Elliot’s Middlemarch)?

600v after 3 tries, i am just a dumb person. i am not even ESL no more!!!

i’m in ESL and got a 630 this december. i think not only me but all ESL people can do better than my score if we try hard enough, because i notice that most ESL people don’t study and don’t challenge themselves. you tend to get lazy when in ESL

try reading anna karenina or effi briest i noticed they have a lot of sat words in them

english is also my second language and i started speaking it 4 years ago when i moved to here! i totally agree with HypnosX that “95% of the ESL are destined to get pwned by SAT, and that’s what the SAT I is for : screening smart fobs”

i’m a junior and i refuse to give up before i earn at least a 750 on the critical reading for the new SAT, although that might sound like a piece of cake for some of you superior native english speakers.

somehow i find reading classics and looking into the dictionary for every word you don’t know a tedious and time-consuming job…doesn’t work very well for me. i think i’m just going to do a lot of practice reading passages. anyone have any other ideas?

Update: got 750 Writing!

For critical reading, read magazines and newspapers (NYT, Time, Nat’l Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Scientific American, just to name a few) when you have like 10~20 minute free time. I recommend New York Times editorial/op-ed because it’s a short read but the author has a purpose in each paragraph just like SAT reading passages.
Also, study vocab because if one doesn’t know the vocab the author uses, he’s likely to miss the tone.

When I moved here four years ago, I knew very little English. I was in ESOL for a short time during ninth grade; however, I found it very limiting. Since sophomore year I’ve been taking Honors and IB English classes. We do extensive reading, both classics and modern.

SAT I Verbal: 700

i started with a 340 in freshman year…my advice to you is to take honors/ap/ib english classes and learn tough vocabulary. for me personally critical reading was the easiset ( i missed only one question overall) but analogies killed me (i missed about half of them).

SAT II Writing: 720

Buy Barron’s book. I read it and my grammar became very good. I missed four multiple choice questions. However, my essay sucked b/c I only used one example. (got 7 / 12).
