SAT vocab for CR sections

I realized that a lot of hard words in the CR Passages. However, these words are not found in any SAT vocabulary books. Is it important to memorize these words for the CR passages?

If you get the collegeboard blue book it comes with 500 or so vocab flash cards that you should study.
Cant really beat that because the CB itself recommends those words.

Other than that you can memorize a list of latin roots-- that should help with most words that the vocab cards dont cover.

^ Where is that?? Are you sure you're talking about the collegeboard book?

^ Yeah, I remember I got them in the 2005 book.
I have the 2009 book too, but that one doesnt have them.
They might have stopped printing them

Tallking about vocab, is there anywhere that gives a list of vocab phrases on the SAT?

I find myself getting pwned by phrases like : tempermental indifference, above reproach, or analytical detachment... There's so many hard-to-understand phrases.. It'd be nice if there were a list of these phrases.

Have you ever actually read an SAT prep book, or do you just do the practice tests like me?
Because I'm pretty sure the prep books actually explain a lot of the weird phrases they use.

I searchd on teh internet for the book you were talking about, but it does not include it... Could you post a picture of the vocab cards?

Sofie, I am 99.99999% sure you are wrong. If it did exist, everyone on CC would go crazy and buy it, or make vocab lists from that book...

I'm about 90& sure they're from a CB book - my brother took a course when he was a junior and i remember punching out the cards for him. I still have them but they dont say what book they are from. I might still have the book somewhere..if i find it i'll definitely let you know.

The Free & Smart Way to Learn SAT Test Vocabulary Words

Vocabulary really isn't that much of a factor on the critical reading passages. Yes, there will be some words you don't know (technical terms, foreign words, etc.), but always remember that you don't have to know the meaning of difficult words to be able to answer the CR questions correctly. The testmakers don't expect you to know every word in the passage, so don't expect yourself to either!

BUT, vocabulary is still important. I think a lot of the test prep companies and schools have been minimizing the importance of vocabulary on the test. But if you do choose to study vocab, it can give you a leg up on sentence completions, because so many students aren't bothering to! I'm an SAT tutor, and I always recommend my students spend time on vocab. Flashcards aren't a bad thing, and they're portable, but far and away the best resource I've found is It's a website that groups the most tested words into logical categories so you can learn them quickly and efficiently.

Hope that helps.
