I live in Michigan, where it is very ACT-focused. I want to go to school out of state (down south) and I am aiming for about a 29 or 30 ACT or that equivalent of an SAT. I’ve take practice tests of both and find i am more comfortable and consistent with the SAT. I often am intimidated by the press for time on the ACT. I am taking both tests multiple times this year (my junior year) but need to decide which to focus more time on. I have been told multiple times that colleges like the ACT better than the SAT…can someone please tell me if this really is true?

Colleges have no official preference for either the SAT or the ACT. Schools in the South tend to use the ACT more, but they still accept the SAT.

Focus on the test that you are stronger in. A 29 on the ACT corresponds to 1920-1970 on the SAT, and a 30 corresponds to 1980-2010. If you get similar ACT and SAT scores on practice tests, focus on the test that you are most comfortable with (in your case, the SAT).

I myself was in a similar situation. I live in Illinois, where everyone takes the ACT, but I personally prefer the SAT because I like the format better and because I actually have time to finish the SAT Critical Reading section, so I focused more of my efforts on the SAT.

agun77, thanks for that answer. I also thought there was no preference anymore because of the common app. This is definitely encouraging to know for sure that I’ll be okay with focusing more on the SAT.
