SAT Writing & Critical Reading

I am going to take my first SAT test in January, I am a junior. I have been reviewing here and there, not hardcore. I took 2 free kaplan tests and got about 1700’s on them, without any prior preparation. I have never taken any class before, they are too expensive.(Are they worth it?) How should I study for the SAT that I am taking in January of 2012? How should I set up my study plan? I mainly need help in reading and writing, I have conquered the math. Is there an outline to follow for the writing section? Any tips, or advice on how to study and what to study? My goal is 2200 or above.

Thanks. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Well it’s certainly an uphill battle for you at this point, but it’s possible to break 2000+. Of course, you will have to start studying hardcore with practice tests and review, and while SAT prep courses may seem expensive, a decent online one may really help you gain strong understanding of SAT concepts.

Are there any particular books or resources that are available to students that really make a difference? What is good way to study for the SAT vocab?

SAT Blue Book (Official Guide to the SAT) (has ten practice tests)
College Board SAT online course (another 10 practice tests)
Barrons 3500 Vocab List
Dr. Chung’s SAT Math Book

Make sure to take all 20 tests that you will have, thoroughly review the explanations (blue book explanations are available online) and you memorize all the 3500 words, and go through with DR. Chung’s SAT Math Book.

Also, use silverturtle’s guide (google it).

All this should be more than enough to break 2100. Good luck!

Dear BipAP,

An easy-to-use and free website for learning vocabulary (possibly the most important aspect of the Writing and Critical Reading parts of the test) is Vocabulary.com. Vocabulary.com will quickly gauge your vocabulary level by asking you multiple-choice questions, whereupon you will be quizzed on a variety of vocabulary words suited to your skill level. Or, if you prefer, you can custom choose what words you want to study.

The advantage of Vocabulary.com is how it makes difficult words easy to learn. Here is a link to a the dictionary page for the word “reticent”: [reticent - Dictionary Definition : Vocabulary.com](http://www.vocabulary.com/definition/reticent)

While not uncommon, the word reticent is unfamiliar to many. Vocabulary.com exceeds at contextualizing the word in a way that is familiar and memorable by giving a simple definition and an accompanying blurb. I have had success at learning new words using Vocabulary.com.

Hope this helps you!

does anyone know of any books that can help to get passage reading up and an 800 on Critical Reading aside from the vocab portion?

I have been using vocabulary.com during my thanksgiving break, it has been going great!! Thank you so much, Nick!
