Is it correct to use “did” in this manner?

“Because the students in Mr. Bob’s Physics class did hands-on labs, they learned more in three weeks than other students (did) in one semester”

at first i thought the error would be “did” because I thought it was supposed to be :they learned more in three weeks than other students (learned) in one semester

is this use of did correct? and will it be tested on the SAT?

also, another smaller question:

does the SAT test this principle? (number vs amount)
specifically in this context: the university has had to double the (amount) of students in its classes because of decreased funding.

i believe i got this question wrong because it should read “has had to double the (number) of students” under the rule that counted objects go with (number) and non-countable objects go with (amount).
