‘It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.’

Thirty some years ago I was eating in a Mexican fast food restaurant and in the next booth there were two teenage kids. One had never heard of sour cream and was amazed that his friend was eating something that had gone sour, and seemed incapable of understanding his friend’s explanation of what it was. Further, he kept referring to is as “sour cheese”, even after being corrected multiple times. It was amusing at the time, but it has scarred me for life, because now every time I see sour cream, which I love, I immediately think of the words sour cheese.

Damn, I wish I had eaten somewhere else that day.

NBC, there are so many cool Olympic events you haven’t shown us. Couldn’t you slip some of those in during this incredibly long, boring road race? I’m at my cottage with just antenna tv, and I sure would like to watch some Olympics that are more interesting than watching paint drying.

Huh, I think this may be the funniest email I’ve ever received. It was sent to our entire neighborhood by the previous treasurer, in response to my email about why I am using the desktop version of QuickBooks rather than the online version as she did and insisted that I use. I said NOTHING inflammatory. She’s nuts.

"MLH,

I feel it’s a control issue with you and I am stepping back from any decision. I don’t feel that strongly to further any more discussion with you about this. I feel you have age discrimination against me and I am done caring on a conversation with you with regards to QB on line or QB desktop.

I will vote to whatever you want. Please do not contact me via email with regards to this QB discussion again.

[name withheld to protect an idiot]"

Age discrimination! She’s giving herself too much credit, she’s not that young. No, it’s “idiot discrimination.” And of course, she has no say in any “decision,” because she’s not an officer anymore.

I think I’m going to have to resign as treasurer. These people are crazy. I have been the treasurer of much larger organizations and know what I’m doing.

Of course I’m not responding at all.

MTA: See my post #7193 in this thread. It’s the same woman.

MTA #2: The nice thing about this thread is that I can say what I want. What I WISH I could say to her is, “Hon, age discrimination? You’re not that young…”

I know I need to let this go, but I’m just so flabbergasted.

Well, that’s pretty darn cool—one of the medal-winning members of the Olympic men’s rowing team ran x-country with my kids (and I was a carpool driver).

Happy birthday to me! My love quietly upgraded my flight to Athens to business class. I’ve only ever flown first class when upgraded on a short domestic flight. Currently I feel like royalty!

Friendliness is contagious and I’ve caught the bug. Yesterday DW and we’re coming ashore and there were 4 women sitting on a log taking it all in. We struck up a conversation and learned they had rented an Air BnB and were escaping Seattle’s heat for the weekend. They were excited to see the monster crabs we had caught so we offered them one. Their to reluctance to accept it was actually really funny. One was embarrassed, thinking she might have seemed to be asking for one, another said they’d love it but insisted the must pay for it, and another said they should drive to a store and buy some.

In the end they happily accepted a few, enough for a nice dinner. It felt so good to make them happy.

So younger S, GF, GF’s sister were supposed to fly down this morning while their parents were driving down with the dogs to spend the week. Wake up at 3:45am this morning to find out their flight was cancelled just then. Best they can find will land them here (or 90 min away) at midnight.

So her parents will be here at 5. Great. We go to the store and buy a ton of food for the week. On the way home, I get word our power is out AGAIN. No storm or anything. Just out. As always. Our utility company sucks

I just wanted to relax in front of the tv and watch some Olympics since I miss out during the week. But instead I have a refrig full of food rotting in a super hot and muggy house with guests about to arrive.

I just found out that the young, slightly awkward woman we pay to stay with our dog when we travel lives with her parents in a $4.5 million house on the beach in our town. I’m gobsmacked.

Update on us. We got power back so no food lost. Gf’s family arrived and life was good. Then the kids’ flight was delayed and delayed and delayed. I am the one to drive the 90 min mostly on a 2 lane country road so I tried to nap. Every 30 min I’d have to check the phone. Finally they said they were boarding at 12:45am. I get up to go leave and boom!! A raging thunderstorm is rolling in. Of course!! I hate driving in the rain in the dark on country roads. Fortunately it last about 20-30 min. And I’ve made it to a gas station near the airport and the kids just landed. I’ll give them a few to taxi and I’ll fetch them. Fortunately no luggage

Due to head out on a trip with S and family Thursday, mostly to be a third hand with the kids! Local D, who was over yesterday to swim, just called to say she had Covid. :scream: Luckily we were outside 99% of the time; currently her D and H are fine. I of course kissed and held GD, so fingers crossed the rest of us are able to avoid it.

Oh, and D was starting a new job, in office, tomorrow. :face_with_peeking_eye: Hope they are understanding.

I got back from Paris late Wednesday. House is a disaster. Dogs overjoyed at my return which tells me they got the bare minimum. Friday I got a continuous glucose monitor and have to relearn when/what to eat because my blood sugar is all over the place and if it can’t be quickly controlled I will need medication. D’’s dog arrived Saturday to spend the week with us. Auction people coming Wednesday, but beastly niece wants to pick the bones one more time so can’t really pack things until she’s finished scavenging. H having a biopsy in a few weeks and of course they’ve totally screwed up the billing for his previous visits.

I can’t decide if I should run away for good or just stay home all the time. Neither option is particularly appealing. I’d go for a run but I can’t until my blood sugar is stable.

Grumble.

I spend a lot of time with my dad - he’s one of my favorite people. We went bike riding yesterday and I was behind him. He looked unsure and hunched and just old ( I really don’t mean this in a horrible way!) and I felt anxious like I did when my boys were little. He’s aged so much recently and I’m having a hard time accepting it. I had to force myself not to cry. It was a real moment of clarity for me - do we ever have enough time with people we love?

Why can’t I find the insomniacs thread? Probably because it’s 2 a.m. and I’m so sleepy! :weary:

In good/bad news, I have the Olympics to keep me company.

Thanks, Hurricane Debby (not).

Electricity is out. Nonstop rain and wind.

Too early in the day for a hurricane party.

But…Kindle is loaded and charged.

Dogs get extra snuggle time. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

And I had some caffeine before outage started.

I’ve just learned Jim Cantori with the Weather Channel is reporting from my parents’ hometown today. Well, that’s not comforting.

I hope everyone affected by the hurricane remains safe.

I appreciate your kind words and the request that I become the association’s next president, but I know myself well enough to be sure I would not be a good one. I get too riled up! I don’t take personal attacks well, and these days, that seems to be part of any governing position. :frowning:

It is amazing how bacon makes everything taste better. The cats licked their dishes clean after addition of a couple of drops of bacon fat to the food they have previously declared inedible !

When our 2 cats both pass away some time down the road, I want a break for awhile from having pets.

S’s family was supposed to fly up yesterday and then drive 2 hours to visit with his dad’s side of the family, returning to Nashville on Wednesday for a few days. Youngest GD was identified as having lice on Saturday, so they rebooked everything for Monday flight. Hurricane Debby had other ideas and now they are booked for Wednesday if they can’t identify a better option on another airline. Oldest GD starts 1st grade on Monday, so not an option to add time to the end of trip. Hope they have better luck moving forward :crossed_fingers: I have a photographer booked for late Friday afternoon to try to get the ever elusive picture of all 4 grands that was my blow out the candle birthday wish :crossed_fingers: :crossed_fingers:
