I dislike yellow. It is great for real flowers but otherwise not for me. Had picked a color for the kitchen and laundry room with too much yellow for me so had to have it redone with a still warm but not offensive amount of yellow for me.
Googled griege. It seems to be along the lines of taupes and warm grays. So much nicer than the cold look of recent white/gray decorating.
Regarding rugs. The texture counts as much as the color. Happy to see blues coming back- my favorite. However, I need to touch the rug so it would feel good on bare feet. Too many are rough. Getting older and our doctor has told us to wear something on our feet even indoors but… A rug is not a wall hanging just to look at. Soft feel essential to me. That has eliminated so many rugs that look good but feel rough.
A dislike of mine is an aged, distressed or faded look. That comes after owning something forever and one wants to replace it. Those antiques and museum pieces were valued when new- try to imagine them as they originally looked. That’s what the owners wanted.
The lesson I am taking from this thread is that you need to decorate for yourself- what makes you feel good. It doesn’t matter what is in style, trendy et al. You have to live with choices daily. The next owner can paint the walls (or they can be neutralized for selling).
We really love this rug–it’s in our family room and has furniture that covers various parts of it but adds great color to the room. It’s worn at this time since it’s in such a high traffic area and isn’t the highest of quality. I hope people continue to post blue rugs since we are struggling to find a good replacement for it.
I love yellow. DH…not so much so. We have a finished lower level…that is painted a cheery butter yellow with white trim. It’s very bright and, I think, perfect for a finished lower level (we do have full size windows but only on one side).
DHs Office in that lower level is painted some beige color…his choice.
I think colors of walls need to be what you like. When we built our house, the whole thing was painted with that (awful) builders off white. Except I asked that our master bedroom be painted a sky blue. The builder tried to talk me out of it…sorry fella but this is my house! We had the entire interior repainted a couple of years ago…used a nicer cream color on many walls, some darker beige tones in a few rooms, a pale aqua in the hall bath…and the same sky blue in our bedroom. I still love it.
Most of my house is painted Valspar Belle Grove Buff. I noticed when I bought a new gallon of it recently that the name had changed to Classic Buff. It is a cream color that leans yellow. For some reason, it looks really yellow in my D’s bedroom. My sunroom is a pale teal (silver sage). It looks robin-egg blue sometimes and more green at some times during the day. The living room is Prairie Grass (looks antique gold), which was the medium shade on the Belle Grove Buff swatch. My D just calls it all beige! lol
I blue has always been a popular color - in decorating - maybe not on walls. I always, always gravitate to the bright deep blue/white combo in many decorative items - it’s fresh and reminds me of water and summer and all that good stuff.
I still feel that too much color on walls is not a great look right now. As mentioned before, use the color in your accessories/rugs/art.
I had a red dining room for years - red dining rooms were so hot for awhile! I painted over it a couple of years ago and I love the very light sage now - calm, fresh.
Enjoyed my browse around Home Goods today. Did not buy anothe rug. But will say that I think their selection of rugs changes quickly - most were unfamiliar to me from two weeks ago when I was there. Guessing that also means they sell fast.
I adore when they start getting outdoor furniture, plant pots etc. I HAVE NO RESTRAINT! I was close to buying a cool outdoor folding side table but somehow walked away.
We are down to the wire to pick paint colors for our entire house. We narrowed it to 2 - SW Repose Gray and BM Pale Oak. I finally caved and we’re having a color specialist come today. She might have something totally different for us to consider.
For the bedrooms we’re going with blues/grays - I don’t really care what’s “in,” but for the common areas I don’t want to stray too far from what’s considered at least OK. We will likely sell our house within the next 3-5 years, and I’m hoping to not spend a ton of money to paint again.
Remember you can always have them mix a color you like at a % - like “Repose Gray at 50% color” - of course once they mix it, it’s yours!
Refreshed the fireplace mantel today. Took off all signs of “winter” and replaced the decor with more fresh colors (blues, greens, white) and some plant greenery. I do this somewhat seasonally though never is it full on “holiday” - I just use more fall colors in the fall (orange, amber, etc.), reds and golds in the winter.
We’re doing some painting here and have done a ton in our beach home so I’ve spent a fair amount of time looking at paint colors. I’ve found the internet and Pinterest to be really helpful. Our house, built in the 90s, full of BM Bone White. Ugh.
Most recent choices:
BM Revere Pewter (hallway)
BM Thunder (my new favorite, in a spare bedroom).
Other favorites (all BM), Quiet Moments, Beach Glass, Santorini Blue
(Sorry if that’s off topic but I’m obsessed with paint lately)
Well, we just had the paint lady come, and she was SO good. @JustaMom5465, our kitchen will be BM Revere Pewter.
Most other common areas will be BM edgecomb gray, but our dining room and powder room will be a medium to dark blue gray color (BM chiswell blue). I never would have been brave enough to pick that blue on my own, but I love it.
She also suggested we paint our office room, which is already painted paneling, a bright white. Wouldn’t have done that either, but she seemed “excited” by it, so we figured what the heck.
Our bedrooms and bathrooms will be in the light blue/gray family. All of the colors look good together. I am no longer stressed about painting, and can’t wait to get it done.
Since we will still be here for 3-5 years, she kind of suggested the big brick wall either stay as is, or painting it so that some of the brick will show through, but I can’t think of the name of the technique. She said we might want to paint it right before we put the house on the market.
