Would anybody happen to know what, on average, is the rate at which scantron machines make grading mistakes? Has anybody ever had one of their standardized tests graded incorrectly because of a mechanical error?

i think my cousin did, but he just misbubbled on the grid sections, so he paid 50 dollars to get it checked by hand and then his score increased by a hundred points on the math section , but he knew this because the detailed score report said that he omitted an insane amount of questions

^That’s human error, then. I don’t think any official stats are released, but I’d chance that the percentage of incorrectly scanned sheets is much less than 1%.

Although I also assume that the rate would be very low, I recall an incident where 4,000 students had their SATs scored incorrectly because of mechanical errors in…2006? I was just hoping that someone could shed some light or possibly tell me if it has happened to him or her.

I think the error with the 4,000 students happened because the forms got too wet before they were scanned. If test forms are filled out correctly, and the scanner is maintained properly, then the accuracy rate of a Scantron scanner is practically 100%!
