Scar cure?

So I burned myself with my hand in the oven, trying to get something out. Normally no biggy but it’s been 3 weeks or so and it’s not going away. I’ve tried vitamin e and Mederma. Neither appears to be successful.

I also have a big scar from last May tripping on the streets in Charleston and doing a number on my knee.

Anyone have even secret, homemade formulas that work - beyond what the derm said (vitamin e) or over the counter scar creams?

Much thanks

I have used Bio-oil on scars ( mostly on my knees from falling while running), and it seems to fade them a little. Unfortunately, I don’t know of anything fades scars completely.

OK - thanks. I’ll look it up.

I know, I want perfection  Stuff used to heal….then I got old and now it doesn’t!!

I still have scars from 55 years ago, so nope, no magic answers. Versed skin cream seems to help make skin slightly more resilient to scarring. H uses it to help keep from getting worse scars in the future and hydrocolidial bandages from 3M (not CVS). He thinks they’ve kept him from looking worse and can feel that his skin seems more resilient since he’s been using Versed. (He also wears long sleeves while in the yard to protect arms from scratching bushes and UV damage.)

Sorry to hear about your burn. Mederma can take months to show improvement. IME derms prefer silicon based products like gel or sheets. Some are available OTC, I’m not sure if you can get stronger silicone products from the derm. If your derm only said Vitamin E, I might get a second opinion. Your PCP can probably prescribe something too.

You must keep the scarred skin out of the sun. Sunscreen lotion isn’t enough. Gloves, sleeves, bandages, whatever works…you need complete block of UV rays.

Thanks - I’ll look up versed skin cream.

I never thought of using a bandage.

After thumb surgery last year, my doctor recommended a bandage over the scar area for the summer. With sun screen applied to the scar under that bandage.

It does take a while for a scar to disappear or at least reduce in appearance.

It used to not - I think as i’ve gotten older, the skin doesn’t recover as well. I just thought stuff eventually heals…ugh.

It does. How long has this been?

this one 4 weeks. Last May, I fell (face planted) on the uneven bricks of Charleston and got a doozy on my knee - that looks like it will never go away.

Oh, to be young and have good skin.

I’ve always hated scars. Most others don’t ever notice them.

Have you tried Scar Away? Sold in drug stores, recommended by my Mohs surgeon.

If ordering online, be careful to buy the heavier bandaid-colored version. I ordered from Amazon, not realizing that they sold a clear one. It is thin and too difficult to work with, although I guess useful for the face.

The thicker ones can be washed and reused, but I didn’t figure that out for a while. You need to retain the acetate backing sheet to lay the washed Scar Away on.

If using on a large area, you may want to buy the C section version.

When my S was young he got a deep cut on his forehead, needed a couple of stitches. Doc said keep it out of the sun for six months! So, we got a bunch of kiddie design bandaids and he happily wore those. I remember using Mederma and some other creams/oils too. Today you can hardly notice the scar, just a faint white line…but it’s probably been around 18 years since this happened, he’s 23 now.

thx

I did a number on my knee about 8 years back and have a big scar. At the time the doc said to use scar strips, vitamin e oil, or retinoids. It sounds like it isn’t fully healed, so probably time to visit the doc. Laser can be helpful I believe, but obviously you’d need a referral for that. I think typically docs refer patients for disfiguring scars, but I am not a doctor, of course.

Time has been the best remedy. My scar is much better than it was.

For Versed, we used to buy at Target but have found it MUCH cheaper on Amazon when it goes on sale for <$10, which is 1/2 price of Target. Buy the skin cream, not the exfoliating cream or the sunscreen. I’ve bought the wrong ones by accident before. The skin cream is the one which helps improve quality of my husband’s skin.

This is what I need to remember.

Thank you.

I have a large scar across my abdomen as well as a couple of light scars on my breasts from reconstruction surgeries. My PS recommended I start to use silicone scar tape or gel once they’re completely healed. It’s supposed to make them less noticeable, and the women in the FB group agree.
They sell one at the office, but also recommended Scar Away from Amazon.

I think that is sort of a rite of passage in Charleston, no? I’ve never seen as many people randomly fall as I did when visiting there.
No idea on how to get scars to fade…just consider it a souvenir from your trip (no pun intended, LOL).
