Scared of being forced to leave my university because of my parents' requirements

@MYOS1634 whoops, misread. French 201 online is only offered at Rutgers New Brunswick (though UNCW’s transfer articulation page lists it as a transfer credit from Camden and not New Brunswick). Do you think that would be more difficult at Rutgers NB in the Summer than it would be in the Fall at UNCW? There’s also this one professor for 201 who I wanted to take in the fall, though I can take him for later French classes.

Thanks for the book recommendation, I’ll be sure to check it out! And I definitely will ask people next time!

Doesn’t matter. Just take it online if 202 is offered in the Fall at UNCW. You’ll need the strongest possible foundation, so if 201 is a bit harder at Rutgers than at UNCW, you’ll still get benefits by starting 202 a bit more advanced than others and thus more able to keep an A. Just make sure the class will transfer (check with the French Dept) and get the book ahead of time, start working on your own because it’ll be very fast-paced due to being during the summer.

The “bonjour” book is actually quite funny and easy to read.

If you’re ready for a solo trip and no one is available, no harm no foul. And if you’re ready for a solo trip but would welcome company, you’re good no matter what!

@MYOS1634 I just checked and did a quick comparison…taking French 201 online at Rutgers, as an in-state visiting student, costs more (over $1700) than it would to take French 201 online at UNCW as an OOS current student (less than $1700). It’s probably because French 201 is 4 credits at Rutgers vs. 3 at UNCW, but I still find it very bizarre (and it also supports my theory that Rutgers vs. UNCW would have virtually no cost difference). Unless I’m eligible for in-state grants that can be used for the summer?

Rutgers is very expensive for a state university.

Well then, take the UNCW French 201 course since it’s cheaper and you won’t have to deal with the issue of transferring. Also you can probably get a used textbook from a current 201 student

@sunnyschool yeah, and for what exactly? lol. So overpriced.

@MYOS1634 before I commit to either side, can in-state tuition grants be used for the summer?

NO idea, look into it… and take the cheapest option.

@LBad96 Yep, that’s why so many from NJ go out-of-state.

Quick update…my registration time was on Monday, but I am currently unable to register due to holds on my account. This is really frustrating me, because idk exactly when it’ll be taken care of, or if I’ll be able to register for my MAJOR courses. I’ve had to email potential professors to see what they can do if anything, but people don’t just drop major classes the same way that they do for GenEds, so I’m unsure of being able to get in eventually. It also doesn’t look like I’ll be able to take French 201 over the summer online at UNCW, as it isn’t an online class. I guess I’ll have to look for ways to hopefully get in-state grants for Rutgers summer online. Also still have to get my CC accounting credits transferred over…fun times. 8-|

I’m tired of being stuck like this, all the damn uncertainty and waiting for stuff to be paid for. I’m not at all willing to leave the school, and I’ve got probably negative interest in going back to school in my toxic state which would basically be a death sentence for my motivation, so PLEASE save any of those suggestions. Leaving UNCW would severely derail my social and academic progress. I’m not done here by a long shot. Just very frustrated that the financial end still hasn’t progressed to where I thought it would/should currently be.

Did you save some of your work study money? Perhaps it’d be enough for you to cover the amount that creates the hold. In any case you need to work full time (you can take the online French 201 class on top of that, I promise) and save everything in order to make sure you no longer have to deal with this kind of problems - it’s the second time, so I’m guessing your parents can’t handle the costs. And with your sister going away to college too, things may get even tighter. So, work and save.
Any news from scholarships?

@MYOS1634 no, I didn’t save all of my WS money, but it turns out that it wouldn’t be enough to cover the hold on its own regardless. Working full-time in the summer to pay for it myself sounds like the obvious choice, but I have a feeling that my parents would tell me “not to worry about it”, like they always do…but I kinda have no choice at this point, especially with my sister heading to college in the not-too distant future.

I don’t hear back from scholarships till the summer or something, unfortunately.

Working over the summer isn’t a bad idea even if you don’t “need” the money!

(Says the three-summer Walmart cashier. $10/hr and nice coworkers.)

@bodangles never a bad idea! :slight_smile:

Asked my dad if he would rather me get an internship or work for our new business the other day, and he seemed to be on board with the internship idea…I’ve been thinking either going home to work at NYC, staying in Wilmington, or potentially even going to Charlotte. Any thoughts, suggestions/ideas?

You need something that makes money. If you find something that pays more than a job at Walmart, all the better.
Even if your parents say 'don’t worry about it ’ you’ve had holds that blocked important actions (registration, twice, and your 'Wings ’ position).
That needs to be a priority. You can’t pretend money is not a problem.

Agree with @MYOS1634 While in a perfect world an internship related to your intended field would be great, you need to be focused on maximizing what you can earn and minimizing your expenses.

@MYOS1634 @happy1 oh, absolutely. These holds suck. Money has been a problem for far too long. I need to be able to set myself up to where I can at least get by on my own (because I’m not going back to NJ to live ever again - just not my taste). And of course, the only conceivable reason as to why I didn’t get the Link position for this next year is because there was a chance that the same issues would ultimately prevent me a second time. And who knows, they may have been right. :frowning: I’m going to go home this summer so I can actually learn to properly drive myself places.

I also intend to live off-campus next semester; on-campus is ~$3700 per semester, and I’d be living in the same place I currently am. Not worth it at all.

Do you have potential roommates with whom you could share an apartment?
A job lined up?
I wouldn’t work in your dad’s business, except part time to add hours to a full time job.
Look for a job asap, like, today. It’s April, many summer positions will be gone.

Also check that your financial aid won’t be lowered if you move off-campus.

@MYOS1634 one of my current roommates and I would be sharing an apartment; we’d need two others either through random selection or if I can convince two of my other friends to live with us. I’ve applied to a few more jobs yesterday and today via LinkedIn. I guess some summer positions are still available?

@happy1 oof, that’s important. Thanks for bringing that up.

Summer internship is good and usually pays more than minimum, sometimes way more depending on the field. Would not recommend going to someplace like Charlotte where you’d have to pay for housing. I’d stay in the Wilmington area, assuming you’d be paying apartment rent there anyway, or stay at home and work in that area.

Does your school have a career center or someplace the aggregates internship listings? I’d go talk with them and see what they have. Or do you have any profs that you have connected with - they often have good connections with companies and might be able to help. It’s in their best interests for you to succeed and most of the time they want to help if possible
