Scared that I am being academically disadvantaged in my APES class

Hello. I am a senior at my high school and am enrolled in AP Environmental Science. I am starting to become worried for my grade this quarter. There have been two instances in this quarter where my grade has suffered due to unfair circumstances.

Early this month, I had to miss three days of school for a band trip; during this period, my APES teacher gave a free-response. In class, they did it open-book; however, I did mine closed-book because that’s how I assumed it was being done. I ended up making an 80 on it while everyone else made a 100. I asked if I could redo it since everyone else got to use their books and notes, but she refused to let me.

Recently, I had to miss another two days of school for a student council trip. There is a test tomorrow, and she gave out a review packet while I was gone. Since I will be in class, I will have to take the test. However, everyone else will have the aid of the review, whereas I will not. Since this is a test and every question counts, I am sincerely worried about my performance, especially since there will be a curve relative to the total class performance.

I feel that I am being academically disadvantaged. Am I, or am I just freaking out over nothing? Even if it is just a few points, it all matters in terms of class rank and the final report for colleges. What should I do from here?

Participating and band and student council are a trade-off for losing a few points. Colleges look at the whole applicant, not just the GPA. It does sound like you need to better prepare before you go on a trip. Be sure you know well in advance of your next trip what you are missing, so you can make the best plans.

I would have students out of class for extracurricular trips. When they come back they say “did I miss anything?” I would say “of course. If there was nothing to miss, why would I insist that the rest of the class show up?”

On the balance, you are probably OK.

I talked to her about it and we took care of it. The trade off thing is a good point though thanks!
