Scared that my math level alone can make me rejected-FGLI

FYI if you advance to semi finalist for Robertson please feel free to DM me. I can offer some first hand insight to the process and program if it would be helpful.

Going DM to avoid being off topic.

It’s premature but after you make a final decision, at this point assumptively UNC, I hope you let us know how it works out with all the DE you come in with.

I’m sure it’ll be treated differently there than say Duke but you’ll get a true sense. It certainly is something to look into if you get down to a final two or three vs just one.

All the worry - and look at you !!

You’re the envy of every applicant in America !!!

Hi, so I checked my carolina portal again and I got (assumedly) rejected from my first and second choice majors (health care policy and biostatistics). This is because it doesn’t show up under the ‘special opportunities’ in my portal. HPM was my top choice major and I am wary about potentially going to unc, studying there and getting rejected when I apply to the major if I attend UNC. Should I call to double check if I was rejected?

My instate very high stat at a top school in state also didn’t get into that assured program or even honors. He was a Morehead nominee too. I believe I read around 35% for Gillings once in, so doable but not a guarantee. Not sure on business school rate. He also put that and didn’t get either. I do believe it would have come up in that special section. Congrats, you did extremely well and should be very proud!!

It would be in special opportunities. But, I would call to ask your chances of getting into those programs year 2. The vast majority of students don’t declare a major until year 2, so it’s not like other programs where not getting in is a huge deal.

Agree for UNC majors are mostly declared as sophomores. With your full-ride, I wouldn’t let it deter you. It’s a great school!

Hi! So I finished my LOCI and I mentioned nothing about yale (as in what aspects make me want to go to yale) other than saying it was my top choice. Is that ok? I only included important updates about scholarships and academics. By the way, thank you so much for your support and help I really appreciate it you don’t even know.

Yes, that’s fine. They already know they’re your top choice so the goal here is to show you didn’t rest on your laurels and have kept going strong - when they give your application another look, so that if they had doubts they are put to rest (or not).
It’s always a mong shot but worth taking.

Have you been in contact with UNC about a visit?

yeah, they said they don’t pay to fly out people to visit for admitted students day even if they are a unc scholar.

I’m local if there is ever anything I can assist with, feel free to message me. A good friend is a professor there and I can always run anything by her too. Tons of friends with current students.

Sorry to hear that, but travel expenses are going to be a factor at any college more than a few hours away. Coming home for Thanksgiving, Spring Breaks, and December holidays
all of these costs should be a factor in college decisions. I was surprised at the sheer cost of flights when my S22 was in Philadelphia - even a week off for Fall Break was an expensive flight.

I do know schools like Yale may have a program to help with travel costs, but what I would wonder is whether that is limited to the first move-in or are other move-in/out events are included.

That’s where colleges like HYPSM come in: they cover travel costs (round trip each semester) for their lower income students. Part of the financial aid also covers the amount to buy one heavy parka&pair of boots for students who may not have them (they found it could be a significant obstacle for some families from the South or Southwest. Students need to keep them all 4 years so better take care of them and don’t gain weight).

You beat me when I had another question, so Yale (and the like) would cover one round trip flight per semester. So flying in August/September and coming home at end of semester.
To get into the weeds, students who do fly often ship all their gear ahead of time or something like that. How would that work practically speaking for the OP?

They would take 2 suitcases&1 backpack with them August freshman year and leave most of their stuff in university storage over the summer.
Lower income students generally do not have mini fridges nor ‘pineapples’ (longtime readers will remember the pineapple roommate). Sometimes they may not have a laptop so the university equips them with one, again, to use for 4 years and lug back and forth.

Thank you! I will submit it then and hope for the best.

I’d keep asking at UNC if ‘some’ group could help you with the cost of a visit. Honors college? A FGLI group? A particular donor? Sometimes one group doesn’t know what another group can do for you.

I emailed UNC scholars and called the admissions number, I might try it.

Also side note: I talked to Yale fin aid this morning and they were so rude!!! Just for context I submitted my financial forms in November and all of my forms took several months to be received my Yale. I called because I had to ask about why my CSS profile was not processed or accepted.

The lady was like, “well, you were deferred not accepted” and “what if you got placed on the waitlist” and “you need to stop being impatient and wait this is a separate process and there has been no action on your file.” i simply asked when my non custodial waiver will be processed and they responded like that. I know someone who applied RD and their form was already processed. All of my financial forms have taken several months to process.

If they want people to consider the school maybe they should be nicer to applicants.
