Scared that my math level alone can make me rejected-FGLI

My son is doing an admitted day in a few weeks, I can update you on what it entailed and how worthwhile it is. I’ll be honest, it’s a great school, but our regular tour was very lackluster. I remember most were oos and how bad I felt they came in for that showing. My expectations are low due to that, but hopefully it’ll surprise me! I know some tours just have off days.

Our UNC tour was also lackluster. Though my kid did a second one and liked it much more. But students love it there.

Yes, and honestly same thing happened at Duke. First, awful and second awesome. Students are very happy there and I don’t think it translates into anything more than maybe they know they don’t have to sell it that hard as so many want to come haha. So much just depends on luck of the day.

Agreed! Carolina doesn’t need to attract applicants/admits.

Hi, an update:

I didn’t advance in the robertson which was ok! I did advance in 2 national scholarships, both 10,000/year (one of them I just had an interview for)! And I did win two local/national scholarships!

Thanks for keeping us updated.
Very glad it’s for such good news! :tada::sparkles::clap:

Another thing–I accidentally forgot to submit my 2 AP score results (those are the only 2 i’ve taken, and I did well in the exam) to yale, and listed my work comittment in grade 11 as 12 hrs/week during the school year only and failed to put that i’ve worked full time every summer…I feel like this will really hurt my application. I have updated them around 4 times since I submitted my EA app there (to submit a loci, mid year report, and only 2 additional updates during EA) should I submit another one explaining this? I really dont want to bother them, but I really made a mistake reporting my hours. Thanks.

I wouldn’t. It calls attention to you not being careful with original app, which to me seems worse than the benefit of summer job. You can still submit the scores

I might ask in the Yale thread as they seem so finicky about updates. We went back and forth on even sending a LOCI even as they seem to actively discourage updates. I am guessing this won’t change anything for better or worse, but I absolutely understand how it is when you want them to have all the information. I think their definition of ‘significant’ and a nervous applicant tends to be different and leaves so much room for interpretation on how to best handle.

I tried to be careful when I listed this out. For one slot I had 2 jobs listed, for another ec slot I had the other two jobs. I averaged the hours so it won’t give an accurate representation of how much I have actually worked. I couldn’t put two different numbers because common app doesn’t let you, of course. But I agree, I should’ve used additional info to talk about this.

DO submit your AP scores -better yet, have your GC report your scores as long as they were 4 or 5. It WILL matter.

Thank you so much for all of your feedback everyone! I sent them an update and apologized for sending another update.

Hi, everyone. So a few things have happened since I last posted.

-In the span of two days, I got rejected from my safety school’s full scholarship after being one of 20 something finalists, and I wasn’t even a runner up. And I also got rejected from the Ron Brown Scholarship (which I interviewed for) as one of 98 semifinalists out of 4000+ applicants. There were 50 recipients of the scholarship…I have not been taking it well, I thought my essays were good but I guess my application wasn’t good enough. (they also made me submit my act score which probably didnt help). I was invited to be a captain (top 2-5 percent of applicants, which was guaranteed for me after I became a semifinalist) but I feel very down about it still because my chances were SO high.

-On thursday, I got a call from a scholarship program that I was an alternate for telling me that the primary delegate got sick and, if I wanted, I could fly to DC and get half of the scholarship (5,000 dollars) if I participated in the program. It was so last minute but my parents didn’t allow me to go, lol.

I am waiting on 3 more national scholarships (1 I am a semifinalist for), but I am honestly feeling pretty depressed about it all. I know it wasn’t meant for me but I had such a good chance for ron brown and didnt even get it, which is a huge red flag for me.

Now college decisions are coming out in the next few weeks and I’m feeling pretty hopeless about those, too.

And I didn’t mention this, but even though UNC gave me a full ride, my parents don’t support me attending UNC because the school is an out of state public that apparently isnt very good and my state university can provide me the same education. They just want me going to my state university (which is tuition free for me and I did recently receive a 3,000/year scholarship from them). They don’t want me going out of state unless its a school like Yale but I’ve accepted the fact that I most likely will be rejected on ivy day.

So a lot is riding on my regular decision schools I guess. I hope it gets better and I get into a really good school that my parents approve of but as of now I am very upset about everything.

Your parents are correct that most public universities are similar. There are only FOUR exceptions - big exceptions.
Unc, UMichigan, Berkeley and UCLA are considered “Public Ivies” - which is why everyone on these forums went OMG WOW ⚘:tada::sparkles::raised_hands::exploding_head::confetti_ball::fireworks: when you said you got a full ride to UNC.
Your parents can look up “public Ivy” or “is UNC a public Ivy” or any college guide (you can photocopy pages from the Fiske guise for them, show them the relevant pages from the book or website “public honors”).

It’s normal to be stressed, worried, and upset. Take a day to be kind to yourself, whatever it means for you - icecream and favorite romcom or horror movie, traipsing through Dinkytown or Mall of America with friends, iceskating or icefishing…:hugs:

UNC CH is one of the top universities in this country. If you got a full free ride, that is an amazing gift. This is one of the few public universities that meets full need for OOS students.

And I’ll repeat…it’s an amazing and well regarded university.

I know on Reddit you mentioned that your parents refuse to budge on UNC. Some suggestions were made that as an adult, and being given a free ride to UNC, that you could attend even without their blessing.

It was also suggested that you find someone at your high school, a counselor or administrator, who could speak to your parents and explain to them what a great opportunity UNC would be.

This is obviously a very difficult situation and I hope it works out.

Congrats on your acceptance and scholarship! One of my kids was an OOS student at UNC. Without any disrespect toward your parents, they are very, very wrong when they state that UNC “isn’t very good.”

I have not read all of the posts. Why do your parents feel this way? My daughter was a very strong HS student (she did not apply to Ivy League schools, but she got into another school with a 10% acceptance rate, got a full ride to Pitt, etc) just to give you a frame of reference as to the type of student she was.

I am going to sound very braggy and that is NOT my intention, but it is important for you to understand UNC and the students who attend.

She was a bio major and found the work to be perfect. She studied and did well. She always felt appropriately challenged and learned a lot from her peers. There were many days where the level of discussion blew her away.

During her first semester she was invited to present a paper at a conference in the community, where she interacted with people from a variety of colleges and from all over the world.

She was very active on campus and in the community. She participated in research since her first year and had several publications under her belt about a year after she graduated. She was also invited to participate in summer research at a well known research institution- and was also published.

She continues to have strong relationships with her professors. While at UNC she was invited to dinner, etc. There is a long list that I will not go into.

She received a random e-mail junior year asking if she was interested in a gap year program which, at the time, had an acceptance rate under 20%. She interviewed and was accepted.

From there…her research experiences at UNC helped land her a job at a well known research hospital in a major city….working alongside MDs, PhDs etc.

These experiences led her to where she is today, in a graduate program doing what she loves.

I told you all of this so that you recognize (and your parents recognize) what the UNC experience entails…not just for her (she was not the exception).

Do you have any specific questions? It is a fabulous university and I want to congratulate you on your acceptance and scholarship!

Who do you know that your parents respect their opinion and also understand the college landscape that can advocate for you? Are there cultural groups or someone on the UNC side that could help?

@BumbleBee2 you already HAVE two safety schools….Minnesota, and UNC which are both affordable, and where you have already been accepted.

What are your pending applications? IOW, which schools are you waiting to hear from?
