That is quite a list of schools that you are waiting on!

The good news is that you already have great options. Congrats again!

FWIW, UNC is NOT a safety school for any oos candidate. I guess because they are already accepted and can afford it, in this situation one could say that, but in general it is as or more difficult to get into than many of the schools listed.

To pass up a full ride to UNC is ridiculous. It is one of the top 20 schools in the nation. Getting a full ride there is almost 0% and if your parents don’t see that as a huge accomplishment, I am not sure what to say. To say “UNC apparently isn’t a very good school” is honestly laughable.

I am worried about you saying not getting these completely rare scholarships is a huge red flag. You have gotten into two amazing universities, one with a full ride. You have achieved a ton and the rest are essentially lotteries where everyone applying is amazing too.

I’m a bit confused by this - and not because UMN isn’t great because it is. And there will be many a student at UMN that will have the academic chops of UNC.

But - if your parents thought this about UNC, then why did they allow you to apply there?

Personally - you can name any school - if you get a full ride, it’s impressive. It wouldn’t matter to me if it’s UNC or U North Dakota. Full rides are hard to come by and those who earn them anywhere - well they’ve done something right.

We all know that UNC is arguably the top public in the country and certainly a top 5 by historic pedigree - but no matter where you end up, I truly believe that you and not the school will bring your success.

So if you’re able to win your family’s support and enroll there, then fantastic if that’s where you want to be.

And if it’s UMN, that’s fantastic school.

While one may show a higher # in a magazine rating, both will give you opportunities to get to where you want.

Perhaps it’s more than rank scaring them - i.e. distance?

That you’ve got an affordable education is a dream for so many - so you’ll be good either way.

Best of luck with the rest.

This student has been accepted to UNC CH with a full ride. And the student likes the school. Thus they don’t need anymore safety schools. They are in at a college that is affordable for them.

I happen to agree with this. UNC CH is one of the very top universities in this country, and certainly one of the VERY top public flagships. Getting a full ride to a great school like this is absolutely wonderful. Really, this needs to be considered seriously.

I think the OP would like to consider it but her parents are refusing. I was also wondering if she could set up a call with someone at UNC with her parents?

And I realize that it is a delicate tightrope with parents, but the OP could pack and bag and head to North Carolina even without their blessing.

So my parents honestly don’t really want me going out of state unless its basically an ivy or similar…and when I had UNC on my list and said hypothetically if my aid was really good, would they let me go. And they said yes. So when I got in and told them, they said they would rather want me to go to my state university…As for distance, that might be something scaring them. I mean, I was applying to schools and always talking to them about it but they might have not realized the fact that some of the schools on my list were a bit further away (like NC).They were fine with me applying anywhere really as long as the financial aid turns out good.

Hi, I agree its not a safety. It never was! It kind of is now because of the fact that I got in. Not a lot of people in my school/including my counselor knew a lot about UNC. My parents included. I know that it’s a good school but to them they see the school as another state university that could provide the same education. So they don’t understand why I would leave my state to maybe attend.

As for the scholarships thing, they were not rare scholarships. They are when you apply, but then I advanced further in the competition. I had such a high chance of winning that not winning either really made me worry about if I did something wrong with my application. I had over a 50 percent chance of winning and I didn’t. I normally brush off scholarship rejections (because I’ve advanced/applied for many and have either not advanced or have been rejected. But not getting the ron brown scholarship really broke me.

I might do this, I’ll have to find out more about who I can speak to. Hopefully my scholarship will get a name so that I can find the person who handles the scholarship since its a whole program.

I will wait and not call until I get the rest of my decisions back.

Unless this is need based aid that will require the parents to cooperate and do financial aid applications in the future.

@BumbleBee2 is this a merit award or a need based award?

And it did…at UNC which is a top university.

Would you be living on campus at Minnesota?

Merit. I haven’t gotten any financial aid from UNC.

No, I would be commuting! It’s cheaper and I don’t really care about dorming if I went.

Well…I think you have two great options. I think UNC CH full ride needs to really be looked at as an option.

Some scholarships that at full rides come with other perks too. Does yours at UNC CH?

Minnesota is a fine school also.

I can see reasons for you choosing either of these options. Luckily you have a couple of months to make up your mind.

So for UNC my scholarship gave me admission to UNC Scholars, which gives me a faculty mentor, a pod of other scholars, a first year retreat, special funding opportunities, etc! There is no name to my scholarship yet, but in a few months hopefully they’ll update my letter with the name of the program!

Will you have these same supports at Minnesota? This sounds fabulous to me. I wish my kids had had this opportunity!

Yes, mostly clarifying for anyone reading it and interpreting it as UNC in general being a safety! They definitley don’t need more schools!

Exactly! I don’t get why they didn’t care where OP applied but now aren’t recognizing both the prestige of UNC and the great offer. Seems like more is at play here.
