I didn’t even get honors at umn
. I don’t have any special opportunities there either. But that’s ok! I think it’s because I originally applied to the college of engineering. I asked recently to switch to liberal arts.
UNC has a new major that will begin in the fall of 2024. It is called applied physical sciences and is located within the Gillings School of Global Public Health (which is very highly ranked). It is designed to connect liberal arts to engineering, with tracks in materials engineering and environmental engineering.
I only mentioned this because of what you stated above.
Oh thank you so much! I’ll take a look at this! Sounds interesting!

Macalester is one of the top LACs in the country and one with the best location.
So now: UNC v.Macalester!
You really need to go&visit UNC to make a reasonable decision
- do you want a public Ivy, warmer weather, a campus gripped by basketball fever, a national brand with many choices, a lot of competition ? Or do you want to be pushed, challenged, and nurtured at the same time at a top national LAC, with closer access to State policy and closer relationship with professors ?
There’s no bad choice.
What a dilemma to have, what an embarassment of riches!
(Btw, living on campus is a big deal because that’s how you build your resume, make friends, network, and… most importantly though perhaps not for your parents, develop into an independent adult.)
Congratulations!!! This also gives you an excellent smaller college, closer to home!
Two fabulous options!!
Thank you so much! I really wanted to get into Macalester because it’s so close to home and i’ve heard such great things about the school!
@BumbleBee2 this is all so exciting for you. Enjoy your accepted student visit(s). And do let us all know your final choice. I think you can’t go wrong!!
Congrats on another fabulous acceptance today!!
I am not sure you need to spend your funds getting to UNC to visit given your repeated interest in being closer to home and getting accepted with an amazing financial package and a renewalable, named scholarship- one named after an amazing trailblazing doctor!!!
Ok so I looked back at my Yale loci to find information about something for an unrelated application that I was filling out and I noticed that when I mentioned one my updates as:
-A virtual grassroots awareness campaign I organized gathering support for a human rights issue amassed over X petition signatures, X amount of views and money contributed to the campaign (I’m not being specific because of how niche it was).
And now im kind of freaking out because I worded this really wrong and said that I made a campaign gathering SUPPORT for an issue (I meant to say I made a campaign gathering support for a stop to the issue)
Should I update them? I really don’t want to because I’ve already updated them a lot between EA and RD but is it safe to say that they know what I meant? Thanks.
You need to walk away from the computer and take a walk around the block. Your worrying isn’t helping your mental health, and you should absolutely NOT reach out to a harried adcom to correct the record.
…
I actually don’t worry and stress much over my decisions. I was filling out an application and noticed that.
What makes me worried is that it could be taken the wrong way when that’s not what I meant at all. By the wording it’s not like the admissions officers can tell that the opposite was true.
And to clarify, I definitely do not want to update them, I noticed this and am worried that this will really hurt my application.
You posted this a few minutes ago.
No, you should not update them.
To clarify, I do not want to update them at all, but this may impact my application so I’m not sure. That’s why I asked.
I think they’ll figure it out - if your wording can be understood as "giant campaign in support of mandatory seatbelts on school buses"or “giant campaign against mandatory seatbelts on school buses” considering seatbelts aren’t mandatory right now it’s pretty clear what you’d be advocating. Or if it were for a health issue, who could imagine you’d advocate AGAINST health ?
Relax. Don’t second guess yourself.
Jitters are normal at this point. Stay away, breathe, read something engrossing or watch a favorite funny show (may I recommend Derry Girls? Just as a dare: I dare you not to burst out laughing during Episode1. Please report back.)
Remember: adcoms are smart and they’ll draw the logical conclusion.

I agree with the posters who have advised not to worry about this in the slightest
-
if that doesn’t work, I think your original wording saying you supported a human rights issue is actually preferable to saying you were against a human rights issue. (Substitute in the word “cause” for “issue” to make this even more apparent).
…And I got rejected from Uchicago. First rejection and first high reach. I am doubting the strength of my application but surprisingly don’t care. Hopefully it gets better.
You should be proud that you don’t need to care. You have great options in hand. That’s a great place to be this time of year. The super elite schools aren’t safeties for anybody.
You knew this up front and it’s AWESOME you applied if interested - and ok that you were rejected. If you never applied, you’d have thought - why didn’t I apply. Now you know.
You’re only going to one - and you got a scholarship at UNC that most would take over Harvard - and a top private school near home that you truly love.
Win Win - and win that you gave your all to Chicago, Yale, and wherever else - whether they come through or not.
And now I just got waitlisted from Wellesley. What the actual heck is going on. I thought I was a good applicant. My twin did the fly in. This school was the least selective of all of my reaches. My essays were really good. I don’t think this will go well.
