So, I worked hard this semester. Nonetheless, I’m still scared to check my college grades. I’m a sophomore at Washington University in St. Louis, and I probably have the following grades:

English 388–A
Physics—B minus
Fiction—A or A minus
Women’s Studies-A or A minus
Spanish–B

But at the same time, I’m scared that I’ll get something lower than this, like maybe a C in Physics. Does anyone have any advice for me or can anyone give me some courage?

Unless you planned on majoring in physics and going on to graduate school in that field, don’t worry about it! Good for you for challenging yourself!

My S just got a C in the second semester of Physics and he is thrilled. No more Physics for him! He got A’s and one B+ in his other classes so still made the Dean’s List for his school. Don’t worry. It all averages out.

Ask yourself: “what’s the worst that can happen?”

Prepare for it.

Follow my two steps, then go check your grade. If your fears come true, you will be mentally prepared to deal with it. If your result is better than expected, celebrate!!!

Take a deep breath and click on it. What will be, will be. I got a C in Physics, and lived to tell the tale.
Trust me, you can get Cs and still get into graduate school. Physics is not a core requirement for law school. The chances of getting a scholarship for a professional school, like law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, is very, very small.

the unknown is always scarier than the known
worst case scenario- you don’t check your grades- they are lower than you realized and you don’t take steps to improve. You fail a class, have to take a year off to retake it.
( Happened to my daughter)

Isn’t that scarier than checking your grades and developing a plan to deal with them?

They’re already there, it’s not like you can get them changed. The cards are delt, so you might as well see what kind of hand you got. Also, if you did your best and studied your ass off to get these grades, then you should be satisfied with them. There are many people who would be jumping for joy over a C in physics(myself included, if I were foolish enough to take a class I know I wouldn’t belong in), so a C may not be what you hoped for, but it’s pretty damn good. Be sure to give us the conclusion to this cliffhanger :).
