Keep em coming!
I’d forgotten how many great scary movies there are!
:)

For books, the scariest ever: Pet Cemetery by Stephen King. I heard that he scared himself so much while writing it that he had to stop for a while.

I loved Paranormal activity and Paranormal Activity 3. Never saw 2. Agree with "The Others and “Ghost Story” (I think that’s what it was) based on a book by Stephen King and Peter Straub as cowriters.

If you like “The Ring” - try “The Grudge” (another remake of a Japanese horror film.) Like coreur, I think that only truly frightening movie I’ve seen in a long, long time is “The Ring.” Now I try to re-watch it every Halloween.

Not a fan of Paranormal Activity movie (the first one) - it felt like two hours of boredom followed by 90 seconds of scariness. I did see “Blair Witch Project” at the very beginning of its run and thought that parts of it were spooky.

“Wait Until Dark” is pretty scary.

Well, pretty much anything by Stephen King. The ones that scared me the most were Cujo and Gerald’s Game. I think it’s because they are both about women in peril who have to survive on their wits alone. Do not read Gerald’s Game on a dark, rainy night. Just saying. If you haven’t read or seen the movie Cujo, read the book first. Then see the movie. It’s important to do it in that order. You’ll understand why after both.

I haven’t seen the movie of Cujo, but I hated the book. It was the last King book I read for a long time.

Scared the living beejeesus out of me!

I remember watching a movie when I was young (like maybe 10 years old) it was black and white and there was scene where a little boy is bouncing a ball against a brick wall and all you see is this shadow of a man creeping across him. I don’t know what film it was, but I still can see that see in my mind and it scares me every time. Anybody have a clue what the movie might have been?

That film was probably “M,” starring Peter Lorre as a child murderer. It is extremely creepy, but with no graphic violence.

cross Posted with hunt!!.
I think the movie may have been Fritz Lang’s movie “M” with Peter Lorre. [M - Fritz Lang Peter Lorre - YouTube](<a href=“M - Fritz Lang Peter Lorre - YouTube”>M - Fritz Lang Peter Lorre - YouTube)

H reminded me of the Ealing Studios movie “Dead of Night” .
Especially the creepy Michael Redgrave ventriloquist turn and the haunted mirror segment Here it is on Youtube <a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube;

Really, Hunt? What didn’t you like about it? I sat up half the night and finished it-couldn’t put it down. I have to say, though, I liked the movie better because of the visuals-it’s a lot scarier to SEE a huge, rabid dog running at you than imagining it.

I like older movies and books just as much as (if not more than) the next person - but so many of these suggestions are from 30 or 40 years ago. Does anyone have any newer suggestions? Something from the last tne years or so?

I have some empty spaces on my Netlfix queue, and I could use a good scare.

Well…part of the problem with more recent films is that they are violent and gory. EK4 wants to avoid those.

I agree with Hunt that the book of “Cujo” was disturbing. Something happened in it that did not happen in the movie.

Actually - there are quite a few newer horror movies that aren’t gory!

“The Gift”, which I mentioned earlier, is creepy but definitely not gory. It’s more like a thriller than a horror movie, though. Movies like this and “The Skeleton Key” are more atmospheric than scary, but I liked them.

“Stir of Echoes” was good, too - not gory, mostly creepy.

Man, I wish I could find some new scary movies! I liked “Let the Right One In” (the original Swedish one, not the remake) but it was a little bloody (it’s about vampires).

Apologies. Instead of “more recent films”, I should have said “most recent films”.
Obviously YMMV.

And I do think that the selections on Netflix are few and far between. But then again… the amount of good product out of the film industry for the last ten years has been abysmal.

Yes, I don’t like gore, not only is it stomach churning, but I think it can be very distracting from the story. ( or lack of it, which is probably why some movies rely on it so heavily)
However, a well timed bit of gore can be very effective- like in the original Alien.

I agree, musica - Netflix isn’t much help.

Although I did recently see “Take Shelter” on Netflix - not gory, not even scary, really; just thought-provoking and unsettling. And very very good.

Seconding Stephen King’s Pet Sematary (I loved that he intentionally spelled that wrong), so creepy and Wait Until Dark.

We love Halloween so we have a list of movies we watch. Most are just for fun and not that scary - Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, Practical Magic, Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, Sleepy Hollow, Nosferatu, and certain Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes.

Fun Fact about Rosemary’s Baby: A family friend was the cinematographer on that film and the entire cast & crew was given a gold baby carriage necklace exactly like the logo on the movie poster. His wife gave me that necklace when I was pregnant with my first born. She had a great sense of humor!

More like macabre sense of humor. I wouldnt have worn that at all while I was pregnant. Might be bad feng shui for my baby. Or maybe Ill balance it out by wearing a huge cross.

I liked Let the Right One In and the American version Let Me In. Its like a creepy, romantic movie but not scary. I agree Take Shelter was not scary. It was like a stretched out Twilight Zone episode. Martha Marcy May Marlene and Drive were more unnerving for me.

A level below Exorcist is the book and movie The Sentinel. I dont know why I read this book at such a young age. Probably because it was the Goosebumps of that time or to offset the Barbara Cartland books I was reading.

If you liked gore emerald, of course I would have suggested Dawn of the Dead, 28 Weeks Later and 28 Days Later and my fave funny, horror movie Shaun of the Dead. Also, I suggest 30 days of Night where you have to deal with vampires and a freezing, icy location where the sun doesnt rise for 30 days.

I do dislike too gory movies like Saw and Texas Chainsaw Massacre and please, please DO NOT watch The Human Centipede. I cant imagine how anyone sane can come up with such a concept.
