Scary books & movies

The 1947 “Black Narcissus” is deeply creepy, imo. Stars Deborah Kerr as a nun in the Himalayas.

Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte gave me nightmares.

^ And how about Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? In the same genre as Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte. No gore but not for the faint of heart, either.

After reading this thread, I happened to stumble upon a copy of Pet Sematary while working at the library in a diff section where they keep the novels. It’s fate. I’ve never read a scary book before so let’s see how it goes.

EK, maybe The Devil Inside? Not really scary but out of all the recent ones, it’s the scariest I’ve seen. Creepy for sure.

Ah, I LOVE Halloween and October. Gonna stay in bed and watch old scary movies all month … (I wish…) I love everything from old cheesy Disney movies to The Exorcist, which is still the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. I love abcfamily’s 13 Nights of Halloween.

Frazzled, Yes! Whatever happened to Baby Jane was creepy as #%@&.

This Thread inspired me to go to the book store and buy a collection of Stephen King’s short stories, “Everything’s Eventual”. I’ll let you know how it is.

Try to read Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. I’ve always wondered why it was never adapted into a film.

I think actually i read that the rights had been sold last year.
To Tom Hanks production company?

I should forward this thread to Duff Mckagan, I think he commented recently that his current band is going to be going on tour with Alice Cooper.
;)

I must put in my vote for The Orphanage. It is the most eerie movie that I’ve seen in a long time and I absolutely loved it.

As for other horror movies, I can’t really think of anything that isn’t gory. But here’s a scary webcomic! (Not for the faint of heart.)

[2011 ??? ?? :: ??? ??](<a href=“2011 미스테리 단편 :: 네이버웹툰”>2011 미스테리 단편 :: 네이버웹툰)

I also liked The Others with Nicole Kidman. The Village is creepy but there are some unintentionally silly parts too.

Neil Gaiman is amazing! I read “The Graveyard Book” in an adolescent lit class I had last year, and I was blown away. Not scary, though - just wonderful.

Especially for someone who’s never read much Stephen King, I think a book of his short stories is a great idea.

Years ago, after I had read some of his other books, I tried “Pet Sematary” and didn’t like it. As I recall, it devolves into a super-gory bloodbath at the end. He writes plenty of things that are far less gruesome.

I can’t believe we got to page 4 and no one had said Psycho. The scariest movie ever made, bar none. I dare you to watch it alone in a dark house. You will never take a shower again. Anthony Perkins played crazy better than anyone ever.

^^ I read an interview with Alfred Hitchcock in which he said the blood shown going down the drain in the shower scene was actually Hersheys chocolate syrup. The normal red fake blood didn’t show dark enough in black and white when diluted in the shower water.

I was going to mention Hitchcock, but I liked Vertigo and his mysteries like The Lady Vanishes, more than his horror films.

I also like Kings short stories much better than his ones that weigh 2lbs. ;)

When I was a young teen the local theatre held frequent showings of Vincent Price movies.
Several of them were fairly campy, but also creepy.

I like scary movies. Gory movies aren’t scary to me. Probably because every time I see a gory scene I think about how they shot the scene and it throws me off of being interested in the movie.

I do have to mention one of the worst " scary movies" I have seen in my life.
I went with my oldest when she was in high school. It was painful it was so bad.
The Blair Witch Project.

So, I’ve been googling horror movies (“50 scariest movies ever!”) - has anyone ever seen “The Devil’s Backbone”? It’s by Guillermo del Toro, the creator of “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “The Orphanage.”

It sounds good, and the critics loved it… and it’s on Netflix!

Is it?!
I don’t have Netflix but I have been looking for Devil’s Backbone for ages. Pan’s Labrynth is my favorite movie of all time.

I liked Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth but the scare level is not high. Pan’s Labyrinth is sort of similar to the animated film Coraline. Both movies had the same general idea: a young girl leaves her home to enter some sort of strange world. Well, hello, sounds like Alice in Wonderland too. Lol.

What about Carrie?
