EPTR: Yes, it’s on Netflix (I just re-checked to make sure).

I agree, Krlilies - most of del Toro’s stuff isn’t really scary (although I admit that I screamed once during “the Orphanage.”) You seem to like the smae kind of creepy movies I do - do you have any suggestions?

Don’t Look Now is a very scary psychological thriller. The original Haunting of Hill House movie and the book really scared me (it’s been over 40 years, but I still remember both).

Stephen King, up UNTIL Cujo. Carrie. Salem’s Lot. The Shining. I had a "dissociative episode " with Carrie, and had to sleep with the book The Shining in another room…in medical school! The Stand. I think I have everything he has ever written including “On Writing” , but the later stuff just didn’t grab me. I could not read Gerald’s Game. Different kind of story.

I like Jodie Foster. Little Girl who Lived Down The Lane, Panic Room, Flight Plan.

Not recent but, Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane.

Suddenly, Last Summer was pretty frightening when I saw it on television. It was made in 1959, & I was born in 57 so not sure how old I was when I saw it, but it made an impression. With Elizabeth Taylor, Katherine Hepburn and Montgomery Clift.

Stephen King’s first book of short stories is titled “Night Shift.” My favorite tale in it is “Graveyard Shift,” and it demonstrates King’s vivid imagination and brilliance when he was a young writer. Warning: You may not want to go down into your basement for a very long time!

I saw “Psycho” in a movie theater when I was a teen and it scared the bejeebers out of me.

@scout59: I think all the good, horror films have been mentioned in this thread. I haven’t seen the older movies cited though so I might check them out too. Here are some scary movies I’ve seen that you might want to add to your queue: The Eye (Japanese version), the Spanish horror films REC & REC2, Drag Me to Hell, A Perfect Getaway, Splinter and John Cusack’s Identity & 1408.

Not exactly horror films, more thriller but worth watching: Buried which stars Ryan Reynolds and Contagion (Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard).

Has anyone seen Melancholia? It was on cable lately and I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days. It runs you through a lot of emotions and although you know what the ending is, it is terrifying.

Krlilies - I have heard good things about REC. Thanks! I don’t think I could watch “The Eye” though - I’m too squeamish when it comes to my own eyes.

Loved Contagion, too. It’s more of a real-life horror movie.

“Drag Me to Hell”–my kids told me it was so outlandish that I’d be laughing by the end of the movie. And I was. They took every cliche and packed it in to the point that it became a joke–but I enjoyed it.
“Clover field” was good.

Agree with shrinkwrap about Stephen King novels. “The Shining” got me initially hooked and I read just about everything he wrote up to “Cujo” where he started to lose me. I couldn’t get past chapter one of Gerald’s Game.
“The Stand” is still one of my all time favorites.

Melancholia is an artsy-fartsy film that drove me nuts. The opening scnes kind of reminded me of 2001: A Space Odyssey. The shots were breath-taking though. You kind of want to put the opening scenes on repeat in a big, flat screen on the wall as some sort of art work if only the theme wasnt so depressing. I dont know which movie was more depressing this one or 21 Grams or Leaving Las Vegas. I want to rush off to the Happiest Place on Earth after seeing this movie.

I don’t like many horror films so for me October is one long month - all those endless Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street sequels on TV all the time.

I read The Passage by Justin Cronin a while ago and thought it was an excellent scary book; then I started the sequel, The Twelve, and the whole thing seemed kind of silly to me. I hate when that happens.

They’re remaking Carrie, which seems unnecessary. I thought the original was a terrific genre film and I don’t know what a new version will do that the old one didn’t.

Stephen King has a sequel out to The Shining - Doctor Sleep. The reviews have been good and I like his books, but I might not have the heart for this one. He doesn’t shrink from putting his child characters in harm’s way.

Frazzled, are you sure you’re not my twin separated at birth? (I’m thinking of your “breaking Bad” posts, too…)

I loved “The Passage” but HATED “The Twelve.” (It didn’t get much better as it progressed…) I bought a copy of “Dr Sleep” but haven’t had time to read it yet. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen a really scary movie or read a really scary book in a long time.

At least “The Walking Dead” starts tomorrow.

My kids are pushing me to watch The Walking Dead but I don’t usually go for zombie stories. I thought World War Z and 28 Days Later were good, though. And something has to fill the Breaking Bad gap on Sunday nights.

I wasn’t much for zombies either, before TWD, but it’s more a story about the human survivors than it is about the zombies. It’s not as good as Breaking Bad, but it fills the void…

They pulled a stunt for the movie. The Carrie character came into a local coffee shop, got into an argument and used her powers. Freaked out customers coming in for morning coffee. You can see it on youtube.
