Scav Hunt!

We talk a lot about the University of Chicago here, but rarely mention one of its greatest folk customs: Scav Hunt. If you think it’s fun, you won’t ever wonder whether fun went to die there again. It started this morning.

This year’s list:http://scavhunt1.uchicago.edu/lists/list2007.pdf</a></p>

Last year’s significantly more clever (to my taste) list: http://scavhunt1.uchicago.edu/lists/list2006.pdf</a>

This was probably the major factor in my son’s infatuation with Chicago. My daughter . . . won’t acknowledge its existence.

Scav Hunt is a little frightening.

But yes, the reading of the list was at 12:30 AM this morning after the list was released at HQ at 12:00 midnight.

This sounds wonderful, I love it! I wonder how many other schools have these traditional campus-wide puzzle/hunt competitions? The last couple years I’ve participated remotely (legitimately!) in helping my son’s team in the [MIT Mystery Hunt](www.mit.edu/~puzzle/) which is held every January term. Someone mentioned on another thread the Reed Thesis Parade, which isn’t a puzzle/hunt but is a cool tradition anyway. What other such traditions should we expose and celebrate here?

Just remember: “All props must continue to be mad props.” :)

I’m new to the forum, but as a student at UChicago I was wondering if I could ask for your help with one particular 2007 Scav Hunt item.

80: For Every 500 People that Join This Group, A Scavvie Will Get It In The Beanbag. [2 points per bags beaned]

The basic premise for this item revolves around getting as many people as possible to join a global Facebook group, based on which the corresponding teams can accumulate points.

The group is located at http://uchicago.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2340821563</a> so if you could join or invite your friends on Facebook that would be truly appreciated. Also, you only have to be a member of the group for about a week - so there’s not really any reason not to join.

Thanks!

YEs my D was jealous of the Uchicago scavenger hunt- because it sounded better organized than Reeds-and had more interesting items.

Reed used to have one at the beginning of the year- but I don’t even think they have that anymore since a golf cart was on the list one year & one was supposedly stolen from the neighboring golf course :(

Thesis parade is cool but it also kicks off Renn Fayre- which is pretty cool too.
Glow Opera
running of the Picts
Human Chess
The ball drop
Swallowing of madagascar hissing cockroaches
all take place during Renn Fayre as do [rumored sightings of the Doyle Owl](Doyle Owl - Wikipedia)

D has also played Capture the Flag at Reed( and paint ball with her profs)- which leads me to think that college is just a very expensive summer camp.
with alcohol.

Id love to hear about other quirky things at other schools though too- D#2 is not interested in attending Reed, but she does like to see the students doing things for fun that don’t have to include drugs/alcohol/sex.

( in fact she is pretty much a prude in that area- not that, that is a bad thing , I just don’t know where she gets it )

Reeds traditions don’t revolve around puzzles the way MITs do, but they do require a lot of creativity.
( and often fire!)
