Scavenger hunt mailing to a high school student?

My son, a high school sophomore, received a mailing from the admissions office re the scavenger hunt–inviting him to submit an item for possible online posting. Does this mean he’s on the school’s radar? Is it based on his freshman PSAT scores.

Probably not. These mailings go out to many students. While your son may have done well on the PSAT, the mailing is probably not from the score but rather from agreeing to send your contact information to colleges on the PSAT answer sheet. Do keep the school in mind 3 years later though!

Thanks. Maybe. But both of my other kids checked off that PSAT box, and got plenty of college mail, but none from Chicago. Their stats were good, bit not as good. Overall, I’ve noticed that the mailings seem to have some association to how well you score on the PSAT.

Well, top 10 schools are not going to send out mailings to kids who score 150s on the PSAT. So, yes, it is based on a score cut-off, but your son is not “on the school’s radar.” In other words, he doesn’t have any advantage over other students when applying.

Chicago’s mailings tend to be more than just information booklets. They have quirky postcards and ask people to respond to them, and then the admissions counselors post some of them on their Tumblr: http://uchicagoadmissions.■■■■■■■■■■/</a> But again, they send this stuff to everyone.

I remember being incredibly jealous last year because several of my friends got mail from UChicago and I didn’t get anything. However, they later sent me a large poster of the campus and the city skyline… That poster is now hanging in my bedroom on an enormous, gaudy, gold frame that I bought at a yard sale specifically for that purpose!
