The three short essays are ~1600 characters, and the long one is ~4700 (i think)
The summer essay is not technically an essay, just a 480character box where you explain what you’ve done for the past two summers.

I just submitted my application, it’s quite a liberating feeling Now the waiting begins…

Oooo myriad… congratulations… Tell us what it’s like!!! stares wide eyed

Lol. yes, the summer essay is actually the most important part of your app. Squeezing 6 months of time into 480 characters requires the utmost refined writing skill. This is how Stanford weeds out the idiots who won’t make it. (jk!)

Long essay is ~4900 Characters. Kind of an arbitrary number, I think. It’s not even close to a base-2 number. … ?!

hi guys,
So, I didn’t put anything under career interest on my submitted Form 1 because I had put undecided, and I thought that signaled I don’t have a specific career interest yet… is that bad?

Damn, I wish I had started on this application sooner- I keep on making mistakes!

It’s not terrible, I thought of it as another chance to sell myself…(arghh what have college apps done to me!)… Just an idea for future careers, probably.
But I don’t think it’s that bad if you left it blank. It won’t kill ya.

Thanks, I feel more reassured now. I did Form 1 in about 20 minutes because I found out that my teacher had already sent my recommendation and got a little panicky.

Hmm, totally off-subject, but how specific are your intellectual idea essays? I feel like I’m talking more about a nonspecific problem than of an exact thing (e.g. more of politics in general as a tool for something else than of a specific political theory).

Mine’s pretty specific and science-y, probably like how most other intellectual essays are going to be…

Otherwise, I think you can get pretty intellectual with politics in general. Just don’t start bashing one party, person, etc. As long as you can write enough within the limit, and make it interesting, go for it! :)

wow haven’t been back here in a month… and the thread like doubled in size…

i just finished all my essays last week and they need a LOT of revision. i’ve set myself a deadline to submit my entire application… i’m sooo not waiting until nov. 1… that’s too scary for me :(

pyleela…yea we need to hang out…and run/dance/swim (or ride bikes since thats all they do there) lol man that would be awesome…

In response to the intellectual essay…mines kinda broad too. Im writing about how using physics to improve my tumbling( cheerleading stuff) excites me…its wierd to do tho like i dont know how to structure it and how specific to get. Should i include technical terms like rotational inertia and like what i have actually learned or just kinda explain the gist of it?

My intellectual essay is about how I have obsessions whenever I find something interesting. I literally spend weeks just playing around with the ideas.

devaaki: The numbers might not be arbitrary: 40 squared is 1600, 70 squared is 4900.

Are we allowed to mention specific colleges, like where we did research at or competed in a competition. Or should we just be generic and say state college or something.

Leeroy Jenkins—I’d mention the specific colleges since that makes your accomplishments more “real” whereas being vague might hurt you (e.g. they think you’re making up stuff)

I don’t think Stanford will think you’re not loyal to them or something (since I saw you post about this elsewhere I think…where you said that was worrying you!)

for the best stanford anxiety relief, go and watch the movie Orange County (it was on comedy central this weekend a couple times, probably will be shown a few more times). it made me laugh about this whole stanford admissions hype going on here.

about the intellectual idea essay- does it have to be your idea? I found a veeeeery interesting research topic and was going to describe it’s findings and how it applies to the future.

EDIT: That sounded kind of like the terminator. :P

Haha… it’s whatever you find interesting. I think it’s okay. The intellectual idea topic seems almost like a freebie. I mean seriously: if you think at ALL, about anything, you pretty much can come up with a topic.

Sooo close to being done… gah…

I have to say though. In terms of stress relief, Accepted is pretty nice, too. Haha, my favorite part is when the guy runs outta the school, screaming “I GOT INTO PRINCETON! YEAAHHH!!” And he throws his stuff like 30 feet in the air. If only I could have that pleasure… For Stanford, of course ;)
