SCEA over ED?

This is a general question that applies to lots of schools, not just Yale - What is a college’s motivation for choosing SCEA over ED.
I, for one, would much prefer if Yale were to offer an ED option, because I’m sure it’s my first choice and I would appreciate the admissions boost. I’m sure ED would be more practical for the college, too, because it would allow them to estimate the size of their class more accurately, without having to speculate over the number of students that will eventually matriculate.
Some would argue that SCEA programs benefit those who aren’t sure where they want to apply - but aren’t early programs specifically designed for those applicants who are sure of their top choice?
Thoughts?

I think that colleges do SCEA because ED heavily favors applicants who don’t have to worry about financial aid. Lots of people (me included!) have to compare aid packages to make a final decision, so you can’t totally commit to a college.

beka nails it. While you may want a vehicle to demonstrate your passion for Yale, clardarkfire, the college wants a great pool of applicants. EA, and not ED, generates a broader applicant pool and Yale is very content with that.
