Hey! I’m a freshman from upstate SC and I’m applying for the governor’s school next year. I have some questions about the admissions process, notably:
How much do GPA, SAT/PSAT/ACT scores and class rank matter?. Mine are decent, but they certainly aren’t anywhere near perfect My GPA/W is a 3.6/4 and UW 4.7/5. PSAT score of 1380 (8th grade) and class rank is somewhere in between 20 and 40 out of around 550. Any alum or current students, it would be great if you could post what your scores were like.
For anyone who applied, what is the male to female applicant ratio like? I know the school accepts the same number of males and females, but after attending preview days I suspect the number of female applicants is significantly higher than that of male applicants. As a male, I was wondering if this would boost my overall chances of acceptance.
Would certain classes (such as AP Calc BC or AP Physics C:M) increase chances of acceptance?
I’m probably a bit late here but I can answer these questions for future people. I’m a current senior, class of 2020
First of all, the school isn’t that competitive to get into lol. They’re still kinda having trouble getting their applicant numbers back up and I’d venture the acceptance rate is a solid 50% nowadays.
I had a similar weighted GPA (4.8 on SC's scale) but a lower class rank (outside the top 10%, small school tho) when I applied, and the PSAT I submitted was a 1390. The average for admitted is actually in the mid-1200s and that means lots of people get in with even lower than that. I think all the academic stats matter but the bar isn't really that high. 3.6 unweighted might be kinda low, but you should be fine. 1380 as an 8th grader is way above average, if you can get that you should be able to get at least a 1450 or 32+ for your application (my 8th grade score was a 1280, I have a 1550 on the SAT now)
You're definitely right about that, they have the same number of beds to fill for each gender but more female applicants. So much so that they actually had trouble filling the male dorm for class of 2021 (which was a low year in general because of marketing issues)
Yeah probably but they're in no means a requirement. There are only a handful of people who come in with BC every year and I haven't heard of anyone even taking Physics C before coming
