Hi I need help choosing classes for us. I have to register next week for 9th grade. For 9th grade I will take advanced algebra/geometry 2, Hons bio, Hons lit/composition, hopefully french 1and likely chorus. I have choice of year long APUSH or semester long AP comp govt/ politics. Anyone taken those classes? What factors should I consider in making the choice?
Is APUSH even an option for you? Usually that class is limited to upperclassmen.
As you are new to US and new to HS, I would recommend AP Comp Govt. AP Comp Gov is less intense than APUSH, and most Americans will have been exposed to USH in middle school, putting them at an advantage. AP Comp Gov will allow you to ease into the AP curriculum since, traditionally, freshman score poorly on the AP exams,
APUSH is offered at my school to those who took 9th grade us govt in 8th grade. Which I did. Grade currently 99 I have been in US most of school to clarify. My single, foreign mom has limited knowledge of us education system and so we found this site and thought we could get help. HS is rural, overwhelmed counselor, not helpful. My mom talked with apush teacher and feels it would be great for developing writing skills. She said 40% of students passed ap test, and a few got 5. A PUSH is year long at my school while comp govt is just a semester. Sorry if my statement was misleading I was trying to put max info in minimum words.
Thanks for clarifying.
That’s really not a good pass rate, which goes to my statement above that freshman perform poorly. Also, the definition of “pass” is 3+, and many private colleges will not give credit for a 3.
I understood that the first time around
It’s up to you. I think that you would be better off waiting to take USH, but if there are many 9th graders taking the course, go ahead and take it, but know that you will have a tough road.
That’s really NOT a good pass rate… you’d need a 5 to be performing at the level colleges would like. Save it for Sophomore year.
Can you take another class (Art?) in addition to AP Government? OR take APUSH, but use FLVS to prepare with their US history class (online) so that you have a shot at a 4 or a 5.
APUSH typically is a junior class - what do juniors take at your school? Does your school offer AP Human Geography, which is often an “AP Gateway” course for freshmen? What other AP classes are offered?
Does your state offer PSEO or Dual Enrollment and is there a community college nearby?
For good colleges, you need to have English, Math, Foreign Language, Social Science, and Science every year, plus electives that interest you. You also need one of each for Bio, Physics, Chemistry, plus one of these AP, unless you do very poorly in two and replace one with marine science or environmental science. You can “double up” in a subject you’re especially fond of (ie. 2 social science classes up to AP level, or 2 sciences up to Ap level, or 2 foreign languages up to AP level).
What’s your heritage language?
I have dual enrollment option starting 10th grade. The ap I currently have on my four yr plan are freshman: ap comp govt
Soph ap world
Jr ap physics, ap calc ab, ap eng lang/comp ap micro econ
Sr ap eng lit. Calc BC or ap stats, ap bio
We have been researching online and I want to go to ga tech comp sci or chemical engineering. I understand ga tech is comparatively stingy. I am in state for tech. There is a program where you can take all your engineering prerequisites at another uni in the uga system and all credits transfer. I plan to spend my senior year full time at the local college doing that program and start tech with a head start. My school doesn’t offer ap chem or ap comp sci.
People were saying ap is better than dual enrollment, but these classes are guaranteed to transfer. I have been surprised about how much info is available on the various schools website.
My native language is english, from new Zealand.
Sorry that should say comparatively stingy with awarding ap credit.
Having more info makes me feel more on control. I am going to ask to do dual enrollment Chem or comp sci sophomore year if I can arrange transport. I will have finished algebra 2 and geometry by then and will be in precalcus.
DE is in some ways better than AP because the best predictor of college success is - surprise! - success in college classes. College classes - even community college- are faster-paced than high school classes: for instance, a typical AP class covers over 9 months, with 5 periods a week, what a typical college class covers in 4 months with 3 periods a week. College classes require more autonomy (using a syllabus) and have less “hand holding”.
Some DE classes aren’t very good (little depth, classmates not too interested…) but the experience teaches you how to handle college regardless. A mix of both can be useful if you can handle it.
That program (GAPerimeter’s?) is pretty good. In addition, save plenty of gen eds to cushion your first year at Tech and try to get involved in research in a GTech lab (you can do that junior or senior year, if you know what you’re doing and target it well.)
