I’m an incoming Undeclared freshman who is very interested in going to a good grad school but also in a social life (ie football games, extracurriculars). When I registered, the advisor made a remark that I could take like a dance class or something or not take a fourth class (32 units from APs). If anyone could chime in about what they know about these classes or if they’re just unrealistic. Senatecourseguide is really lacking with EALC 350.

Psyc 100- Intro to Psych (thinking about at least minoring in Psych)
Ealc 350g- Chinese civ (very afraid of a class full of juniors and seniors. I have an aptitude for history but don’t have any real experience with this particular subject.)
Hist 245gm- Gender and Sexualities in American History
with Writ 140

I personally had a terrible time with HIST245. Being a science major, my mentality is that before you can make any statements, you gotta have evidence. I felt as if most, if not all, of the material taught in the class had meager evidence at best. Plus, the professor is all over the place; the lectures have no point of focus. Hence, around half the class decides not to show up. That’s just my opinion. I’ve known people who get A+s on their midterms, but I have no idea how they do it (actually, it’s quite easy to kiss ass in that class). I’m not trying to be antifeminist or anything, but the class lacks substance, and the group of people whom I studied with agree with my point.

The WRIT140 counterpart is much more interesting. Every 2 or 3 weeks, you’ll have to turn in an essay analyzing a few short pieces handed out by the instructor. The short stories deal with feminism, gay rights, portrayal of women by the media, race, etc. It’s tough getting an A in any WRIT class, but I feel that I learned much more about gender and sexuality from my writing class than the GE.

Edit: About your schedule: It doesn’t look too bad. I don’t know anything about EALC350, but it could be a little tough. I took biology, chemistry, HIST245, WRIT 140, and a guitar class first semester. My GPA wasn’t that great due to HIST245, but the main reason I screwed up was because I was still trying to find my group of friends and cope with college life.

Thanks for the input! To be honest, one of the reasons why I chose 245 was because usually classes like that have a particular message which you can just regurgitate and get an A.

I’m taking EALC350 Chinese Civ this semester too! I’m a freshman also. I was worried about it being a 300 level class, but that doesn’t necessarily mean its full of upperclassmen. I’ve heard that it isn’t impossibly hard. I’m taking it because it sounds really interesting, so hopefully that will motivate me to do well. lol
