Schedules for 10-11

^^^ah got it. That’s a bummer

^ haha yep. By the way, you are majoring in IR, right? Do you have any advice as to what books to buy for MC220? I saw that you can use ones on reserve in the library…I’m wondering if maybe I just shouldn’t buy some of the books to save money, or if I’ll use them all enough that it would be worth purchasing my own copies.

Is it okay for me to purchase my books now or should i wait for classes to start?

^ It’s OK to buy them before classes if you have one of two conditions:
-You can return them for the full price within a week after school or whatever.
-You can afford it- because you sometimes won’t need the book, even if it’s listed.

H2013: I took IAH 231C Roles of Language in Society in Spring 2009. I really enjoyed it. Who is the prof? I had Wagner, she was pretty good. Just never be late for her class, she will call you out in front of the entire lecture hall ;)

@zhongwen,
same here. English classes didn’t transfer so I have to take 1st year writing classes but second year science classes, it blows lol

Flying Octopi- I have it with Wagner too. Any other tips, like are her tests mostly from the book or the notes??

Romanigypsyeyes- That’s what I heard, but i’m just nervous about needing the book the first week of class. Do most kids come into the class with the books or buy them later?

@Punkchique - yeah, it does suck. haha I was kind of expecting my credits not to transfer, but it would’ve been nice not to have to take more English classes.

@H2013 - I am a transfer so I’m not 100% sure on how things work at MSU, but at my last college, my experience was that almost all, if not all, freshmen come with all of the books that are listed as required, but about 50% of upperclassmen wait a bit to see what’s actually needed and what isn’t. The advantage to buying books ahead of time is you can buy online without having to worry about when it will arrive, but if you’re just going to buy books from one of the campus bookstores anyways, I would suggest waiting.

@H2013- The majority buy them either the day before, or the first week. Trust me, you’re fine. Obviously nothing will be due the first day (unless you’re contacted ahead of time), and then unless you have class 4-5 days per week, you will have time in between one class and the next to get the book.

@zhongwen: yep I’m majoring in IR! You can use the books on reserve at the library, but I highly recommend to buy your own IR books. I know it stinks, but you will literally be reading every page of every book you get assigned to (for the large majority of professors) and it is a pain in the butt if you don’t have the text to reference with you especially when you are writing essays. However if you do make a friend also in your IR class that lives in the same dorm as you, you can always share books. Don’t bother buying “recommended” books though. Also generally, the IR books are not too badly priced (aside from the main textbook they are between $10-30 - the main textbook you can find used from other madison students or on half.com for a decent price. Just curious, what professors do you have for your madison classes?

H2013: Tests are mostly from the notes. I didn’t really read the book at all and I got a 4.0. Just make sure to go to lecture and pay attention and you’ll be fine. There are a few really easy homework assignments, one paper, a midterm, and the final. When I took it she gave extra credit if we participated in linguistics studies that some of her students were doing. I found the class to be pretty interesting though there were a few boring parts.

New schedule for Fall:

16 credits
AL 485 Foundations of Museum Studies Tu Th 3:00 PM - 4:20 PM Case Hall
ANP 429 Ethnographic Field Methods Tu Th 1:00 PM - 2:20 PM Giltner Hall
RCAH 291 Creative Workshops
REL 101 Exploring Religion M W 3:00 PM - 4:20 PM Berkey Hall
SPN 330 Phonetics and Pronunciation M W F 8:00 AM - 8:50 AM Berkey Hall

I like this schedule a lot more… if I could do something about that pesky 8 AM Spanish class, then this schedule would be perfecto!

@fa-la-la-lena - Good to know! I still don’t know who my MC111 professor is (it’s just blank where a professor’s name should be on the schedule, and no textbooks have been listed yet), but for MC220 I have Schechter. Have you had him?

@zhongwen: Schechter! Yep I’ve had him twice. Some people adore him while others are more apathetic, I’m in-between. He’s very experienced and super smart, and speaks very eloquently (but also sardonically, he likes making fun of the authors of the books/some other professors). In terms of workload, there isn’t too much but there is a lot of reading. Not very much variety in his classes though, more lecture-based and once in a while he asks questions or organizes small-group activities. Generally I’d say he’s a pretty good professor, definitely a quintessential “madison” professor.

@fa-la-la-lena Sounds like a decent professor  Yay for not much to do other than reading hehe I just found out that my prof for the other class will be R. Harrison…know anything about them?

FRN 201 Second-Year French I M Tu Th F 9:10 AM - 10:00 AM Berkey Hall
GEO 203 Introduction to Meteorology Tu Th 10:20 AM - 11:40 AM Natural Sciences Bldg

RCAH 192H First-Year Seminar (D) M 12:40 PM - 2:30 PM Snyder Hall
RCAH 201 Transcultural Relations M Tu Th Snyder Hall

Still trying to figure out if I’ll be able to get into jazz band…I plan on re-emailing the professor in the morning.

^Who do you have for 111 and 201?

You’re going to love your 192 prof :).

I have Aronoff for 111 as well as 192; I’m glad, since I’ve heard he’s good (I have him for 112 in the spring as well). I have Keller for 201.

Why doesn’t this forum quote posts in my reply even after I told it to…weird…

^ You have to do this:

Hmm, not familiar with Keller.

Aronoff is awesome though. I almost rearranged my whole schedule this year so I could have classes with him again… but alas it simply was not possible :(

PS: I could give you his 112 books for cheap if you want them in the spring :).
