Is it inadvisable to schedule a lot of classes on Friday in the first semester? There’s a certain class I want to take to fulfill a requirement, but to do that with my current schedule I would need to move Chem Lab (currently on Monday) to Friday, where it would go until 4:30 pm. Should I just take the class later, or get it out of the way now?

That depends on if you want to be in a class a lot on Friday. What “certain class” is this?

COGST 1101 (which is on MW 2:55 - 4:10, also pretty late in the day).
Basically it’s either take it in my first semester and have to be in class a lot on Friday, or take it in a different semester where I will already have more work and be busier.

I think most would argue class on Friday is worse for a senior than a freshman.

Which is more important, getting the class completed or not being able to leave for the weekend early/ starting the weekend Thursday night?

As a freshman, getting Fridays off should not be your priority. Generally, freshmen don’t have Fridays off. I personally think it’s not a good idea to have Fridays off in your first semester. It might make you lazy/make it difficult for the remainder of the semesters in which you will likely have to take classes on Fridays.

While chem lab on a Friday is not the best option, but hey you gotta do what you gotta do! You will be very thankful in your senior year!

I still have class on Friday anyway, but just one and it ends at noon.
I think I’ll try to get into COGST during add/drop period if my workload isn’t too stressful.

You probably don’t want a class on Friday during Spring semester (in-class finals on slope day are no fun!) but you won’t miss out on so much during the Fall.

Quite honestly, as an alum I’m semi-offended (not in any real/meaningful way obviously) that as a freshman/sophomore think you are entitled to Fridays off. That right is earned through slogging through late Friday classes as a freshman/sophomore.

From a social standpoint, most people (that do go out) go out on Thursday nights. So if you’re planning on having a class on a Friday, let it be a class that you can show up to hungover.
This will be a bigger deal second semester as pledging and stuff starts second semester–which means you will have a much busier social calander. That is, if you do decide to rush.

I’m taking 17 academic credits (18.5 total) without adding COGST so I’m taking a pretty full schedule anyway although I anticipate it won’t be that hard because they are mostly review of material I’ve taken before, and my days actually end pretty early except for Monday if I don’t add it. If I do add it, it might be kind of a tough schedule for the first semester though.

I’m not that type of person so that’s not what I was concerned about. I do like having Fridays off though as my school had shorter days on Friday too.

Anyway, I keep going back and forth on this so I’ll just decide when I get there.

Freshman are capped at 18 academic credits and that IS a good guideline in my opinion, at least for your first semester. Once you get a feel for college, take as many credits as you want for semesters 2-8. In fact, I’d advise cutting the courses back to 15 credits. There is no reason you need to take that many classes your first semester. You’ll get to all your requirements eventually.
