Scholar Award USF/Summer Hours

My daughter transferred from UCF to USF for her spring freshman year. USF had accepted her with an academic scholar award when she was in highschool. She did not need to apply as her original application was still in place. She was awarded half of the scholarship since she only spent one semester at USF.

She took 12 credit hours for spring and is taking 3 credit hours of this summer. I want to be sure this summer’s three hours count towards the 2011-2012 school year in terms of the necessary 15 hours to keep her scholarship?

I see on her 2012/2013 awards information in financial aid that the proposed scholarship does not reflect. I did make a call a few weeks back and was told if she took 15 hours this semester, the scholarship will stay in place. I will call again to be sure, but curious if anyone has input?

Thank you!

Bright Futures rules are pretty tricky. Your daughter could phone the Fl Dept. of Education Bright Futures folks (888 827-2004) to ask about her specific situation. I don’t think they’ll talk to a parent about specific case unless your daughter is right by the same phone with you. It looks to me like she might have had to do ALL the required hours by the end of spring semester–which wouldn’t include coursework summer term-- to renew her BF scholarship: <a href=“Home - Florida Student Scholarship & Grant Programs”>http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/ssfad/PDF/2010-11HSGradsRenewal.pdf

According to the rules on the BF website, if your daughter earned the hours for which she was funded by the end of the spring term she should get her BF scholarship renewed for 2012-2013. Frankly, I don’t really know exactly what that means! Call the Dept of Education.
