S got accepted into Scholars program and is having trouble deciding on which community to join. He will be a stem major, so he was thinking of choosing either Science,Discovery and Universe or Science, Tech and Society, so he could bond better with other stem kids and have more in-depth relationships with those professors. But he is also very interested in art and international studies-just not enough to major or minor. He is thinking that belonging to either of those programs would be a good way to explore those areas of interest for him.
Would he be the only stem kid in art, and would it be a disadvantage for him somehow? Thanks to anyone who can help guide him with this!
Can anyone help with this question^?
@Marylandfour Do what interest him, he will have plenty of time in STEM courses, if he is interested in art it will allow him to meet people with different interest and have something different to do outside of the classroom. If he hates it he can leave it. There is no way one will be an advantage or disadvantage, there are so many opportunities to get experience and do things that scholars is just one of them, not the only opportunity.
My D’s friend did the art dorm (at a different school) because he didn’t want to live in a dorm with all of the kids in his same major and it did not work out for him. He didn’t really have anything in common with those kids and wished he had gone for the science dorm. Just one kid’s experience though.
Hmmm, tough call. Son did sts.
Since he did that instead of VIRTUS, it was great since he did in fact live with a lot of other engineers so he had that built in support of people to study with down the hall kind of thing.
The classes that he had to choose from really interested him - the electives were his favorites. Loved the visit to Army Research Lab!
However, I would look closely at SDU because I remember my son telling me all the time how they did some really cool projects …
Thanks all. I feel he should stay in the stem group, mostly to be near kids he would have more interests in common, but he is thinking art. He will make his own choice, I just want him to feel comfortable with his decision. I know it will be easy to transfer into engineering, but he was really hoping to have been able to choose VIRTUS. Oh well.
