I was looking through the OSFA website, just making sure I had all of my documents in…when I saw the required scholarship application for prospective students that was supposedly due on February 15th.

Am I screwed?

I’ve heard absolutely nothing about this application, yet it says it is required. Help!

I went to the website and looked at this, and understand your question. It looks to me like you found the scholarship application for need-based aid. But it’s unclear whether the application is ONLY for need-based aid.

You are considered for merit scholarships as long as you apply EA at MD. I don’t believe this application has anything to do with that. I think your question is worth a call to the financial aid office, though, unless someone here knows from experience. It would be good to know who should submit this application.

You’ve certainly made me curious enough to make a call tomorrow myself!

I have no idea how I missed it. It makes me wonder how many other schools have an application like this that I just haven’t noticed. There was never any emails about it or anything.

If the priority deadline has passed, is it still worth filling out?

I called the Scholarship Office, and this is an application for private scholarships that are administered by the U MD Scholarship Office.

If you look at the application, you’ll see that there are lots of yes/no questions. If you can answer yes to any of the questions, there may be a private scholarship that you can be matched to. If not, it’s unlikely of any benefit to fill out and submit the form.

This funding is separate from the university provided scholarships and grants.

And it’s not too late. You’ve missed the priority deadline, but applications are still accepted and considered on a rolling basis.

That scholarship page is a GREAT resource. While I don’t know what your particular major is, I do know that for engineering there are LOTS of opportunities throughout the year for scholarship money. For engineering at least, there is a general scholarship application that is due separately from the other private scholarships also listed on that page. Many of these other scholarships have later dates and they all vary as far as their due dates. UMd certainly seems to have messed up with their B/K e-mail mishap, but the do have many other opportunities that can more than compensate for the B/K.

Is the separate scholarship for engineering available online? Are these scholarships just for upperclassmen? On the Clark website, I see some specific engineering (merit) scholarships, but it seems to be the same process as for other awards (e.g., apply during the early action period).

If I remember correctly, there is a generic online engineering scholarship application for the many engineering scholarships given by the university. WHile there are many opportunities for freshmen/sophomores for smaller scholarshps, the larger ones are typically given to juniors and seniors. In addition to these, if you look at the list of corporate scholarships, many of those have separate scholarship applications that are due at various times throughout the year. Also, (I have to ask my son for the name of the website) there is a place where you can apply for these same scholarships and they will match that scholarship if you apply via them, up to a certain amount. For example, one scholarship my son received was with AFCEA for $5,000. This company (I will post the website when I get a chance to talk to my son) added another $1,000 to the scholarship (they matched up to $1,000). AFCEA has been VERY generous for computer engineering type scholarships (not sure what your major is) as has IEEE and SAME.
