Hi - My S will be attending college Fall 2013. I need some advice on how to motivate him to complete local scholarship applications and essays. Anyone have any for me??? Lol…

I read somewhere (possibly here on CC) a few years ago that a parent had the following arrangement with her child: They decided which scholarships the student would apply to. If he applied and didn’t get the scholarship, no problem. But if he didn’t apply, he was responsible for paying the cost of that scholarship.
When considering a “carrot or stick”, the above is definitely a stick. But another option - a carrot - might be to cut a deal: if you get X scholarship worth $2,000, I’ll pay you $1,000 (or whatever amount). Still cheaper than YOU paying that $2,000. Of course this one only works if you would be the one paying whatever the scholarships don’t cover.

THanks for the reply My2Sunz! Ahhhh yes the power of negotiation…I just may have to put that tactic into action. I think the “stick” would be counter productive but the carrot/cash would definitely motivate. Thanks for the suggestion! Now I have to count my money!!! Lol…
