So I’m an American citizen and I’ve been living in Ukraine since my childhood. I’ve already completed general secondary education with high marks. Now I’m a second year student getting budget-financed education( I’ve got Ukranian passport too,so I’m able to get one free) at Bogomolets National Medical University.
I’m very interested in coming back to USA, my motherland and get there high education. The problem is that the tuition for universities in America are extremely expensive! I live only with one parent-my mom and she doesn’t have enough money to finance my education. So the only solution would be to get a scholarship + financial aid.
Is that possible? And Where can I find scholarships for Americans living abroad?
Any extra help with how to get grants for example would be really great.
Thanks!
There aren’t any specific scholarships for US citizens who are living abroad.
You are already studying in Ukraine, so you would need to apply as a transfer student. Most places do not offer good financial aid to transfer students. Most colleges and universities would only offer you student loans, and that would not be enough money to pay for your education here.
Are you studying Medicine? If so, your best option is probably to complete that degree, then come to the US for your residency. You can read about that here: http://www.ecfmg.org/
To learn more about higher education in the US, read through this website: http://educationusa.state.gov/ Then make an appointment with the counselors at the advising center closest to you. There are several in Ukraine http://educationusa.state.gov/find-advising-center?field_region_target_id=&field_country_target_id=207&field_center_level_value=All
If no one there has worked with a US citizen recently, it is probable that someone in another nearby office has.
The #1 source of scholarship is the institution itself. An excellent university which has transfer scholarships is University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. SUNYs are other bargains but a bit more utilitarian in appearance. Cornell has scholarships for students admitted to Biology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (lots of specialties, including for pre-med and pre-vet).
Some Liberal Arts Colleges also have a few transfer spots with scholarship but you’d have to apply widely to qualify - Bucknell, Goucher, Dickinson, admit a few transfers with scholarships.
Regardless, you wouldn’t be able to study medicine in the US for now; you would likely major in Biology or Biochemistry, perhaps with a specialty or concentration (neuroscience, physics…) if you want to transfer classes. Med school starts after 4 years of college, a set of core classes + a major of your choice.
Look at private universities which give generous financial or merit aid. And look at public universities which give any kind of aid to OUT OF STATE students.
As a US citizen, u are eligible for US federal aid and gov’t subsidized loans, but u will have to fill out a lot of forms to apply for it. Is your mother a US citizen or US Permanent Resident? If so, has she been filing US income tax returns?
