I posted this in another thread and though I would go ahead and post it here as well.

A couple of things to keep in mind if you are planning to audition for CCU and want to maximize your scholarship opportunities:

The highest level merit scholarship is the President’s Scholarship ($7,500 per year for OOS students and $4,000 per year for in-state students) and it is available only to students ADMITTED by January 1. So if you meet the academic requirements and you plan to audition for CCU, it’s worth it to go ahead and apply in the fall and get your academic acceptance in so you qualify for this level award. The other 2 merit levels require admittance by March 1. These awards are stats based and do not require any special application. And they are renewable every year as long as you maintain the GPA requirements.
[Financial Aid & Scholarships](http://www.coastal.edu/financialaid/meritbased.html#CCU)

There are also application-based scholarships. These do require an additional application and they are due March 1 of each year. These are available to incoming freshmen as well as returning CCU students. These can be combined with the merit-based awards. My D currently receives a merit award and 2 “application-based” awards. So if you have been academically accepted before March 1, it is worth reviewing the information and applying for any awards for which you are eligible:
http://www.coastal.edu/financialaid/...pguide2012.pdf

CCU also offers talent awards based on your audition. You are automatically considered for these when you audition. My D doesn’t receive one of these, since for her the academic award was higher, but since it is also a merit-based award I believe it can also be combined with the application-based awards.

According to Ken, the dates can be “fudged” a bit for theatre majors, which is always good to hear. I know it’s so hard to keep track of everything for auditions, much less for these type of scholarship and award requirements, so hope this is helpful.

Thank you so much for sharing this information.

We were initially very interested in CCU, but thought the costs (we are OOS) would be prohibitive.

I believe we’ve “talked” before in threads about scholarships and merit aid. Can you elaborate on the application-based awards listed above? The link doesn’t work. I looked at the CCU FA website and it looked like most of the application based scholarships are for SC residents.

Does your D have most tuition paid for then?? We are hoping to find scholarships that would pay for all or most tuition and just pay for room & board.

So not only are we looking for a great MT program and good “fit” but a school that offers great merit aid! I know…the proverbial needle in the hay stack!

My D’s stats:

4.0 UW GPA, 4.5-4.6 W GPA
-3APs this year; 5 next year
-Honors, Gifted core courses
-35 ACT
-NHS/BETA Officer, Spanish Honor Society, Dance Team, Talented Theatre, Band, Choir
-Community Service
-Part-time job
-Been in community/school musicals since she was 10
-Dance since 3

mom2them - I checked on the website and apparently the application-based guide is only available from December 1 - March 1, which is the application period. There are a variety of scholarships that are application-based. I believe my D submitted for 3 this year where she met the eligibility requirements.

For next year, OOS tuition will be $22,050. My D receives merit aid in the amount of $8,500 per year. She receives no need-based aid so we are responsible for the balance of the tuition plus her room and board. Fortunately there are opportunities for on campus jobs and she has worked since her freshman year. That definitely helps alot! Plus, it will be less expensive for her to live off campus this year (freshmen and sophomores must live in university housing) so I am excited to be the mom of an upperclassman for several reasons

If you have more specific questions please feel free to PM me.

With those grades and if the standardized test scores are also high, the university has merit based scholarships that will be up to $9500. There are other scholarships you can place “on top of” that, but they cannot be from the state. They must be from endowments. Those exist and we are working to get some of that money dedicated to incoming theatre students.

Ken, Thank you for answering directly!! We’ve been talking on these boards every now and then for a few years, and now it’s here: My D will be auditioning for schools THIS fall. We have always thought CCU was a good program and being in the south was a plus for us.

We had hoped my D might get National Merit, but we know she’s a few points off. But she did get a 35 on her ACT. At several other southern schools with larger alumni pools from which to draw scholarship funds, that ACT score would guarantee her full tuition. Unfortunately for us, the MT program at those schools don’t quite seem up to par with CCU.

We do plan for her to audition at CCU, hopefully in November, so will be applying early. Just waiting to see the audition dates so we can work it into her schedule.

Thanks again for being so readily available!

Not a CCU scholarship, but thought I would go ahead and mention the states that currently list one of the theatre degrees at CCU as being available through the Academic Common Market:
Delaware - BFAs in Acting, Design and Technology, Musical Theatre, and Physical Theatre, and BA in Dramatic Arts
Kentucky - BFA in Physical Theatre
Maryland - BFAs in Musical Theatre and Physical Theatre
West Virginia - BFA in Musical Theatre

Just a quick reminder that the Priority Admission Deadline for the Presidential Scholarship ($11,000 per year out-of-state and $6,000 per year in-state) and the President’s Scholar Award ($9,000 per year out-of-state and $4,000 per year in-state) is [bold]January 1**. These awards are stats based and do not require any special application. And they are renewable every year as long as you maintain the GPA requirements.

I understand that at this point in time, most students haven’t even auditioned for CCU. But if iCCU is a school that you are seriously interested in, and finances are a consideration, I would personally encourage you to check these out. Especially if you are eleigible for the Presidential or President’s Scholar awards, it is, in my opinion, worth submitting your application now.

Students who apply to get into theatre are not subject to the priority deadlines any longer. We negotiated that away in order for students and faculty to complete the audition process. It doesn’t say that online. -Ken

Is there any funding for kids who are average in grades and test scores. If there is no academic money available are there any other options for these kids? Add to that out of state tuition. The net calculator didn’t give us much hope.

Ikemom - The performing arts scholarship is currently $6,500 per year for out of state students. There are application based scholarships, but those require that you apply before March 1. I know Ken mentioned that BFA students are no longer bound by the priority deadlines for academic awards. My guess is that the March 1 deadline is still firm for application based awards but that would be a question for Ken. I did find going and visiting with the financial aid office beneficial. You can PM for more details on that if you like.

Thanks for the information austinmtmom! I would like to PM you with a couple more specific questions. However I don’t know how to PM you - I’m new at this.

Ikemom- Check the scholarship page. Son applied early, and received a nice merit scholarship. Not sure if there was a deadline for those. He is an above average student, but not in the stratosphere.

These are the current automatic academic merit awards. These do have deadlines, but as Ken notes, the students who get into the BFA are not held to the priority deadlines.

The scholarships above, as a reminder, cannot be stacked with the Visual and Performing Arts scholarship that most BFAs are offered. As Ken most recently put it, these scholarships are “coupons off” from the university, and not actual gifted money so they cannot be combined. If the academic scholarship (listed above) you quality for is more money than the VPA (below) you will receive solely the academic. Ken automatically recommends all who are offered a spot in the BFA this award, so long as a student meets the guidelines below:

Visual and Performing Arts Merit-Based Scholarship
