Scholarship Negtiation

I have thoughts of becoming a Bio medical Engineer and have been accepted into University of Dayton, University of Akron, University of Cincinnati, and University of Toledo’s Engineering Programs. With large amounts of money from all but Cincinnati because I have not heard back from them. Cincinnati is my favorite college however and I have decided to commit regardless of the scholarship situation because I was so fond of it. However if I receive a scholarship and it is not of my satisfaction would I be able to negotiate a better deal. Or would de-committing be an option or, I don’t know if this is the right way to word it, but as a threat. My main question here is, is it possible to negotiate scholarships and/or de-commit from a school? -Thank You

Why would you commit before you know that any college is an affordable option? You have until May 1 to compare financial aid offers. It is sometimes possible to leverage one college’s financial aid offer to negotiate with another, but your bargaining power is limited to the time before you commit to any school.

I agree with @siliconvalleymom wait until may 1 or close to it to decide. If you commit you lose all bargaining power.

  1. Wait until you receive your offer from U of C;
  2. Compare offers;
  3. If U of C is still your top choice but they have a lower offer, contact your Admissions Counsellor and explain that you would prefer to attend U of C, but you have received superior offers from X, Y and Z. Usually they will ask you to send in the other offers for confirmation and comparison;
  4. It is POSSIBLE that U of C will alter their original offer, based upon the competition.

Good luck!
