Scholarship Program Administrators (SPA) Scholarships and Excess Funds?

My college’s financial aid policy is such that it reduces university grant (based on need based aid) with scholarship monies. Scholarships cannot be used to pay for family contribution, so basically the college will be reducing money already given to me and I would still have to pay the family contribution, which means my scholarship monies will be wasted.

I won a few scholarships administered through SPA, so I was wondering what the chance of is, if i contacted them, that they would make the check out to me? Should I even bother (cause afterall, they’re a national organization and local scholarships are easier)? I’m also unsure of whether they would report it to my school or not (cause technically it isn’t allowed, but I just feel really frustrated). Any help/advice?

Thanks!

On the Sam Walton Community Scholarship (which is administered by SPA), I emailed SPA and they replied that a check will only be made out to the college. No exceptions.

You have to report all scholarships to your school, it’s wrong if you don’t. On the other hand, has your school provided enough money not just for tuition but COA? This includes books, room and board, etc. Ask your college whether they decrease your scholarship based on tuition or COA. Also, you can argue that you’ll need that money for other various (school-related) expenses such as laptops.
