Scholarship Programs similar to University of Alabama

With Alabama, you are able to go on the website and simply see how much money you qualify for based on standardized test scores and GPA… are they any other schools like this that are not small and local?? (Thanks)

Maybe this could help? http://automaticfulltuition.yolasite.com/

I know Ole Miss, OU, and Kansas had straightforward listings for automatic awards.

Ole Miss is FAIRLY straightforward. They stack the scholarships, and it isn’t immediately clear how it works when looking at their page. Like Alabama, Ole Miss gives almost full tuition for a 32 (about $150 short) and full tuition for a 33. At Ole Miss, only a 3.0 grade-point is required, versus a 3.5 at Alabama. If you have a 3.5 you get an additional $2,700 per year.

Participants in the Honors College get an additional 8,000. I’m not sure this is automatic, but my understanding is that it is given out liberally. There are a number of other scholarships which give out $10,000 per year that are competitive. I don’t know if the $10,000 stacks on top of the $8,000 or not. If so, it would be a completely full ride plus spending money.

Arizona State has a good scholarship calculator.

Wyoming has the Rocky Mountain Scholars program, based on stats.

@EarlVanDorn Is the Honors college additional $8000 at UA? I haven’t seen that unless you are talking about University Fellows and the CBHS.

I think he’s talking about Ole Miss

Temple did not sure if it’s changing

@jeepgirl I was referencing Ole MIss.

Is that 3.5 gpa weighted or unweighted at ole miss for the additional 2700.00?

@Chilibean I don’t know the answer, but I would think weighted if it’s based on a 4.0 scale for regular classes and AP classes getting 5 points for an A.

Thanks for the response.

@EarlVanDorn

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but it wasn’t really clear to me on the Ole Miss website, but do students receive free tuition all 4 years? Or is the full prize equal to just one year of tuition?

@SecondTenor The Academic Excellence Award, which is the tuition waiver, is for all four years. I’m not sure what the minimum grade-point requirement is, I think 3.0 or 3.3 to keep it. Note that it is on a sliding scale starting with an ACT of 24. A 29 gets $3,500, plus $5,000 towards the OOS fee of just over $14,000.

The Holmes or Bledsoe Scholarship is also automatic and on a sliding scale, but it gives students with as low as 24 on the ACT $1,000 per year if they have a 3.5 g.p.a. This goes to $2,500 for OOS students with a 32 or higher. This, too, is for all four years. Mississippi residents receive slightly more.

Ole Miss can be a very attractive option for the student with an ACT of 27 to 31 who isn’t going to get a full ride anywhere. They won’t at Ole Miss, either, but they will get substantial merit aid.

The Ole Miss scholarship page can be hard to read, because it doesn’t make it clear that the scholarships stack. So it’s possible for a student with a 33 ACT and a 3.5 grade point to get the following automatically:

Academic Excellence: Full tuition
Holmes: $2,500 per year
Technology Award: $1,000 (Freshman year only)
Student Body President: $1,500 per year
Valedictorian/Salutatorian: $1,500 per year
Eagle Scout or Girl Scout Gold Award: $1,500 per year

There are additional scholarships that are given out fairly liberally that are worth an additional $8,000 to $10,000 per year. I think most students in the Honors College get $8,000 per year, but I could be wrong. Anyone getting one of these scholarships on top of an Academic Excellence Award is going to be receiving very close to a full ride.

@EarlVanDorn

This is a cery detailed and helpful response, thanks for all the info :slight_smile:

I don’t think there is a higher ranked school that has a generous scholarship program like Bama has.

I imagine a number of factors are driving a number of students to continue to increase UA’s student population - evidently now the largest rate of growth for a state flagship in the country. Our DD is taking advantage of the generous scholarships.

Very helpful info. Thanks much.
