scholarship questions

Hearing that 1520 was just below the higher scholarship money made me really nervous, because my SAT was a 1520 and I haven’t heard anything. I sent in my SAT because 2300 is higher than my ACT of 34, but I got 35 on both the reading and math sections, which is comparatively better than those sections on the SAT. I was really hoping to get a good scholarship here, but it kind of looks like I’m out of luck. Do you think it would make any difference if I sent in my ACT score now?

This is my first time on this forum. Yesterday, my daughter received a letter awarding her 5K per year at Pitt. My first question is around how scholarships are described in these forums. When someone talks about a 10K scholarship is that per year or for the four years? I am not sure if a 5K per year at Pitt is a top tier award or not. Here a few of her stats: In-state. GPA 4.1, SAT 1510, she’s involved in every club/group under the sun and lots of community service. Pitt is not her first choice but I think it’s a great school.

My daughter just received today a $10k merit scholarship. We are OOS. My D has a 1510 SAT, 3.8 GPA and has a very strong Math background. A bit less than we were hoping for. Scholarships are still being processed don’t give up hope yet.

kmrcollege - Is that 10K per year?

ogirl, I don’t think it would hurt to send the ACT. Maybe you could give them a call and ask?

sgbern, the amounts people are mentioning are per year, so $10K/year, $15K/year.

@sgbern - yes $10k per year

Everyone is eligible for all Pitt scholarships, except for the Chancellors which is by invitation only. It is full ride. Then there are scholarships that run from 2K-full ride for 4 years. So far this year I have heard of full tuition awards, 15K, 10K, and today 5K awards. Everyone who has gotten any money and reported it on CC has had fantastic scores of 3.8/1450 on up (there may be one or two lower, but I cannot remember them). I’ve also learned that there were perhaps 75% more apps to Pitt in the early going this year, so money is spread very thinly this year. It’s not good for those of us still waiting to hear.

What schools at Pitt did your children get into?

I think it will be interesting to see what the yield looks like. I am certain the jump in applications early in the season was due to Pitt accepting applications beginning in July. My child is giving Pitt serious consideration despite having so-called Ivy-caliber stats; I am curious to see if others in similar situations are doing the same.

I got an award today of 15K/year (NO Chancellor’s Invite)…I was hoping for full tuition since I am OOS and will be a NMF and can get full tuition/full ride to some schools from that. My stats are:
1520 SAT (2300 w/writing)
4.0 UW GPA
Rank 1 of 273
5 AP’s (all 5’s) + 2 more this year
Sent in my Common App essay and 1 teacher recommendation
I am going to try to call to see if sending in my ACT (35 M and 35 Reading subscores) could increase my scholarship. Good luck to everyone else waiting, but this definitely lowers Pitt on my list of schools.

Crossing my fingers for all that are waiting. I would get those ACT scores in for those wondering. D got full tuition I assumed from SAT 1450 but after reading incadinca’s post, I think it was her ACT 34 math & 35 English.

I would send in ACT scores if you have them. Pitt super scores the SAT and ACT so they will take the highest from both (only the Math and Verbal sections count).

Every year the full tuition scholarships are getting tougher to get. There has been a big increase in applications since my oldest applied 7 years ago Pitt is on the radar especially for kids needing full tuition scholarships and I am not surprise by the increase of “ivy” stat students. It is a great school and DS loved it there!

The minimum stats required for consideration is just that for consideration. You will have students with stats below the minimum being awarded the full tuition scholarships and you will have students above the stats not getting the scholarship. It is all dependent on what Pitt is looking for (perhaps they need someone from North Dakota or someone who plays the tuba).

Good luck to all still waiting!

For a full ride, we’ll move to ND and learn to play the Tuba if needed. I find the financial aspect of this more stressful than the acceptances.

Also, I don’t expect anyone to have an answer for this, maybe just venting. But we are visiting Pitt and UNC-Chapel Hill the same week in Feb. I have a feeling that could really backfire on us.

This process has diminished my interest in Pitt as a potential school sadly. I was accepted in November. The letter mentioned entrance into the Honors College and consideration for scholarship. Received a guaranteed admission to school of public policy in December. I have called them in late-Dec, early-Jan, and late-Jan to see where I am as far as the merit scholarship process. I have not received any info besides I will know if I am picked by mail before the end of Februrary. This is a ridiculous process and a tremendously long wait. I have a 34 ACT/3.86 GPA and went to the public high school that the Director of Admissions at Pitt went too, which he brought up when I talked with him at a visit (it is one of the most rigorous, competitive, best public high schools in the country). The notion that I may get no merit aid from Pitt and it would cost $40K a year is absurd. I understand it is more difficult now but there is no reason I would pay $88,000 more over four years to attend Pitt instead of the Commonwealth Honors College at UMass Amherst.

I think we need to remember that the college admissions process, everywhere in this country, has become completely insane. It’s not Pitt; it’s every school.

@3tallblonds, how do you think your travel plans might backfire? Are you concerned about the weather? If so, can you allow for an extra day? If you and your tall blonds have not visited Pittsburgh before, it’s a nice city with plenty to see and do, so allowing extra time for the weather and using it to visit the Carnegie or other places if you can would eliminate some stress.

Remember, many students are looking for the full tuition scholarships or the complete full ride. I believe the number of applications from high-stat kids have been increasing every year. The competition for the same pot of scholarship money has increased. For Pitt, there is no guarantee of any scholarship so unfortunately you have to wait and hope something shows up in the mailbox.

We were extremely lucky with the scholarship money for both our kids. We are OOS and definitely would not pay the OOS tuition for Pitt. DS would have gone to our state flagship if he didn’t get a full tuition scholarship from any of the OOS schools he applied to. He was lucky and had choices. My advice to future applicants would be to cast a wide net (especially if you need scholarship $$) and make sure you have a financial safety school.

Still no word on scholarships from Pitt for me. I was accepted back in August but my stats are not as high as others on here who are only getting 10k or 15k I do have one full ride elsewhere and full tuition at another, so I cannot complain. And MTnest is right. Now with results coming in a lot of kids I know are saying they should have gone for some schools that awarded more money. No fun getting in if you find out you cannot go because you can’t afford it. I have a friend who loves Case Western and got in, but the merit money will still leave them with like 30k to pay (they won’t get need based). His dad said ‘forget it’. He got 15k from Pitt OOS and said it is still not a great deal because the tuition will go up every year but the 15k won’t. Their state flagship honor’s program will still be cheaper and travel cost won’t be much at all.

I have to agree about being surprised about how long this process is taking to hear about merit scholarships. My D applied in September, was accepted, then received guaranteed acceptance in Engineering Master’s, GAP pre-med invite, but still no word. We are still waiting word from Two other EA school’s Purdue & University of Cincinnati, while the rest have come through with their offers. The kids did their part, on time for EA dead-lines, it seems like these schools need to move this along.

Unfortunately, many of the schools (including Pitt) do not let you know that you are out of the running for a scholarship. So students/parents wait and wait… :(

Re the comment on playing the tuba for a scholarship, darn. Should have brought that up as mine actually can play one  not to mention a seusaphone(in my lay person’s mind, that’s the marching band tuba). Sorry if i messed up the spelling to our musically inclined folks.
