Scholarship $ sent to school after bill due

My daughter was notified this weekend she has been awarded a fairly substantial local scholarship, however the organization sends it directly to the school and that won’t be until after August 15. Her term bills is due August 9, is there a way to hold out this amount from what we pay or will the school refund it back to her or just credit it to the spring bill.

I’m going to call the school today, but wonder if anyone else has dealt with a similar situation.

Oh, dear, don’t worry about this. It happens all the time. Go ahead and call the school, but they will tell you just to withhold the amount from your payment – and then if it doesn’t come in they will bill you in September.

Daughter received notice from the school that they are aware her NM Scholarship award will arrive after the due date (and we will deal with this every semester…), and let us know that we may see late fees, etc, but these will be reversed after they receive the NM award. So I would definitely let the school know this money is coming, so they are ready to forgive any fees, etc that might show up on your d’s account. And congratulations on the scholarship!!!

We went through this with both Ds. Called each school. Both said it was a non-issue.

We pay online at D’s school. There is a way to pay less and fill out the form explaining the discrepancy, all online. For D’s one time NM scholarship, we just paid the full credit and had a credit for next semester.

One thing to watch for is that your child may have to endorse the check for the school to
cash. One year my child didn’t even after he was called by the school and me multiple times to do so.

I was called by the school when the check had expired ($4000), and I had to spend a lot of time getting the awarding agency to reissue the check. The school waived payment until that could be accomplished.

Yes, I agree with all the posters that you subtract the scholarship amount off the tuition payment that you make, and if there’s a place to leave a comment, you explain it there. If you can’t, then call them and they should make a note of it for you. My daughter even transferred schools and the new school also accepted this method. Late fees were never even added (so didn’t need to be credited later). Congratulations to your student on her scholarship … always fun to see the rewards of their hard work.
