Most every scholarship that my child is applying for is a one time grant. Are there significant grants or scholarships students can apply for beyond Freshman year?
After the first year it looks like the most promising scholarships are through the college or major specific trade organizations. See if the college has a list of outside scholarships and start there.
What amount qualifies as ‘significant’?
Many colleges offer departmental scholarships and such, but they tend to be relatively small amounts.
Your student can apply for external scholarships (local, regional, national) for current college students but those are generally competitive, time consuming, and again tend to be relatively small amounts. External scholarships can also impact (decrease) any institutional financial aid you are receiving, so check your kid’s college for their policy.
Is the college affordable if your kid does not get any grants for years 2-4?
Other option is to apply to transfer to colleges that are likely to give more affordable net prices. But note that merit scholarships for transfer students are less common than for frosh, although they do exist at some colleges.
