Scholarships Availability

How would I find out what scholarships my child qualifies for

For which school or schools? Try the school’s website and look under Financial aid.

Have your child ask her GC and/or look on her high school’s website in the GC area. The GC will know of local scholarships.

Also, it may be helpful to know that there’s different kinds of aid.

Scholarships are one kind.

Then there’s merit aid (aid given by a school to attract a student, because of a high GPA or an athletic talent, or for some other reason, regardless of that student’s income level)

Then there’s need-based aid (given by a school in the form of grants, direct aid, etc. based on the student’s income level, so that the student can attend the school.)

Not enough information. Scholarships for a specific school?

You say your daughter got accepted to Stan State. What is Stan State and where is it?

Did she receive a financial, aid package from them?

What is your family income.

What is the cost to attend this school?

Will she be commuting from home?

What are her SAT or ACT scores and GPA?

She gualified for financial aid and got an acceptance letter from stanislaus state it’s in turlock ca my income is very much low income I’m a recovering a addict from an abusive relation ship lost my kids for two years have had them back now for 3 years have been clean for 4 years we have had a place of our own for3 years I still haven’t gotten a job I get severe headaches and back pains from the damage done by my ex husband . So I’m down a lot. I’m in the dumpsters every chance I get to get recycling then I hurt so bad for a few days . I do not get any help from their father not even a day off .my ex screwed my credit up he even filed taxes in my name now I owe irs.that’s being investigated.her GPA 2.9

I’m very confused. In your other thread…you say this is in Stockton.

The $600 is for housing and enrollment deposit. Correct?

Is there a Cal State she can commute from?

No OK first of all the interview is in Stockton that’s a whole different thing .the college is in turlock and the 600 includes tuition registration housing deposit and the testing

So what was confusing

What is the interview for?

You were saying you needed $600. At first it sounded like you needed it for an interview. When asked…you said she was accepted to Stan State. Then on your other thread…you talked about Stockton…and the deposits.

Sorry, but it was confusing…and quite frankly…it still is.

What is the interview for…and where? Is there a cost associated with the interview? Stockton?

What exactly is the $600 for? Testing? Why testing? Registration and housing deposit I understand…but what testing? I’m assuming this is Stan State.

Can you really afford to pay for room and board costs? Anywhere?

Here’s a list of outside scholarships I found on your child’s school’s web site
https://www.csustan.edu/financial-aid-scholarship/scholarship-information/off-campus-scholarships

also follow @mom2collegekids suggestion and seek the assistance of the high school guidance office for local scholarships.

Please keep in mind that scholarships may reduce your need based financial aid because you will then have less “need”

Please contact the school. Many colleges will waive those fees for low income Pell eligible students.

CSU’s don’t meet need so go ahead and try to get as many scholarships as possible.

Cal Grant will pay for her tuition (make sure your DD talks to her GC about qualifying for CG and getting her GPA sent in to the right place for that!)

Pell Grant and student loan will cover much of her room and board, but she’ll need to work over summer and be thrifty to cover other costs.

Hopefully, she’ll also get some work study to also help with costs. If she is awarded WS, remind her to look into how she will find a WS job…usually info about that can be found over summer and probably there will be a meeting to attend around the start of school…don’t miss that!

Hi Mischelle,

I looked on the school’s website, and it says that scholarship notifications will begin in June. Has your child already applied for scholarships? If not, then it says the deadline is March 2, so there appears to be some time. It does appear that there may be some “recommended scholarships” once you start the application process.
