Scholarships based on Leadership?

How do these work, and what are typical standards to recieve these at elite universities?

Please provide an example of an “elite” university with such a scholarship.

Okay, so for example Johns Hopkins, who considers leadership for sholarships

I think you are talking about merit scholarships that take into account your academic qualifications and, for most like the Johns Hopkins Hodson Trust Scholarships, they will look at leadership and other contributions you can demonstrate. While I don’t think they publish the statistics of the students who get such an award, they will be the cream of the applicant pool, and offered as an inducement for top students to attend. See the website for details. For this one, you will have a minimum gpa to maintain.

Okay I know that already, I just want to know what would be examples of say leadership that would qualify for these scholarships

Do you already have tippy top stats? like a 2350 SAT and straight A’s (tough curriculum)?

If so, then maybe Student Body President? Captain Varsity team? Leader of Math Team?

the awarding of these scholarships are not “based on leadership”. Leadership is part of the downselection process from a pool of super-stats kids.

I just ordered this and the red book. How well will these two prepare me for the ACT if I got a 2190 SAT (690R 720 M 780 W)?

You have a 1410 M+CR (equivalent to an ACT 32). For you to be competitive for a JHU or similar award, I’m guessing that your M+CR would need to be a 1550+

I know, Im working now on getting them higher, but thats the reason I made this thread. Becuase I know as of now, my scores arent really high enough for academic awards, so I was wondering what was meant on collegeboards website for JHU that says non-need based aid is for leadership.

It says the scholarships are determined by leadership (as well as academia). So say, really good ECs with lots of leadership…will that help for aid, or what? And what kind of leadership are they referring to?

Are you doing ANYTHING that would make you a role model for other young people?

Awarded on the basis of academic and personal achievement, leadership, and contribution, these scholarships, worth up to $28,500 per annum, are awarded to fewer than 20 freshmen yearly through the Hodson Trust

*It says the scholarships are determined by leadership (as well as academia). *

I don’t think you can view “leadership” as something equal to academic or something that can overcome “average scores” for the school unless you’re a desirable URM. These highly competitive scholarships are used to “help the school” in some way…by targeting highly desirable students who’d likely choose an ivy.

Virtually every student who’s accepted will be able to list various “leadership” qualities, so “something else” must be present to get the student to being selected/awarded the money. That “something else” is likely tippy top scores, desirable URM, etc.

Keep in mind that just being a “school leader” (which again, many kid are) isn’t enough for a school to think “hey, he warrants over $100k in merit money.” The student must be benefitting the school’s numbers in some way.

Schools like JHU will have enough applicants that have BOTH tippy top stats and amazing leadership that they don’t have to award to someone who just has leadership and good stats…unless the student is a desirable URM.

OP: I would say one requirement to receiving any scholarship is the ability to spell words correctly:

recieve is spelled receive
sholarship is spelled scholarship
becuase is spelled because

I don’t have the same caliber of grades that you have but I have done what I would consider leadership activities.
I have been in 4H for 8 years and mentored young people. I am also a 4H leader and mentor young people.
I have over 2,000 hours of community service. I lead Worship at Church.
I am creating a support group for people whose parents are addicted to substances.
I am a member of FFA. I have volunteered at homeless shelters. I think this is what they might mean by leadership. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

I started a teenage hedge fund that grossed a quarter of a million dollars, getting biomechanics research published, made an app worth $130,000.00 for my app/website development company, started 3 clubs, including a stem club that got famous individuals to give guest talks, international finalist for DECA, a couple other leadership positions in clubs, 11 other awards, multiple varsity sports, raised $20,000 for my church (200 hrs), traveled to cozumel, MX to research endangered species of birds, and I’ve worked 4 jobs full time (witg raises, bonuses, and promotions) during HS. So none of that will help reduce the deficiency of my scores? And what if I get a 34/35 on the ACT?
