Hi guys, so I’m currently in the season of applying for scholarships in my senior year of high school in order to afford a four year university. For those of you who have managed to receive large amounts of scholarships (either all from one organization or from many smaller organizations), what scholarship and grants did you apply for and how much did you get? thanks!
The best aid usually comes from the colleges themselves and is more widely available than outside scholarships. Outside scholarships are sometimes renewable for 4 years but often are just a one shot deal for one year. If you are looking, your best bet is to look for colleges that will give you good aid for your stats, rather than polling to see what other people got. Unfortunately many deadlines have passed. Same for outside scholarships.
What are your gpa and test score breakdown? Where did you apply?
It’s too late for most of the big time scholarships. But for future reference, low income students should check out Gates Millenium and Questbridge.
To the OP…how low is your income? The Gates, for example, requires that you be eligible to receive a Pell Grant.
Some states also have grant aid for low income students. Check that.
But the advice above is correct. The best financial aid comes directly from the colleges.
At this point in senior year there could be smaller local scholarships, like Rotary Club, etc. Check with your high school guidance office for those, they should be starting Jan, Feb.
They are usually only for one year though.
Also if your grades are high and you are member of your school’s NHS, see if you can be recommended by your principal for the NHS scholarship. http://www.nhs.us/scholarships-awards/nhs-scholarship-program.aspx
Here is one (we found through collegegreenlight) for students in Texas, Illinois, Pennsylvania or New Jersey with min GPA 3.0:
